High school bands in Dana concert

YOUNGSTOWN

More than 115 high school musicians from Harding High School in Warren and Hudson High School will join faculty and student ensembles from Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music for the 12th annual Wind and Percussion Invitational at Stambaugh Auditorium at 7p.m. Friday at Stambaugh Auditorium.

Visiting students will participate in master classes with Dana professors throughout the day, culminating with the concert featuring the two guest high school bands along with the YSU Percussion Ensemble, and the YSU Wind Ensemble.

Tickets will be $7 ($6 for senior citizens and students) at the door. Admission is free for anyone with a valid YSU ID.

Carpatho-Rusyn film to be screened

YOUNGSTOWN

The documentary film “Even Tears Were Not Enough” will be screened at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave. Admission is free.

Rusyns, Slovaks, Poles and anyone interested in World War II and Communist domination of central and eastern Europe will enjoy the film. It is about the Polish Communist government’s forcible resettlement of its Carpatho-Rusyn population in 1947.

Nightclub fire anniversary

WEST WARWICK, R.I.

Rhode Island is marking the 15th anniversary of a nightclub fire that killed 100 people and injured more than 200 others.

The Feb. 20, 2003, fire at The Station nightclub in West Warwick started when pyrotechnics for the rock band Great White set fire to flammable foam installed as soundproofing. Ty Longley, the band’s guitarist and a Brookfield, Ohio, native, perished in the blaze.

The brothers who owned the club and Great White’s tour manager were charged in the fire. All three reached plea deals. Lawsuits brought by survivors and victims’ relatives were settled for $176 million.
