Mahoning County Republican Party to conduct screening process for appeals court candidates

Those seeking to fill the remainder of Mary DeGenaro’s unexpired term on the 7th District Court of Appeals are asked to contact the Mahoning County Republican Party, which is conducting the screening process.
Mahoning is the most populous county in the 7th District and has been asked by Gov. John Kasich to handle the screening of candidates for the vacant seat. Kasich, a Republican, will select DeGenaro’s replacement.
Those wanting to get a copy of the application packet are asked to call the Mahoning County GOP at 330-629-7006.
The document will be sent to interested candidates by email. Candidates also should provide a letter of interest, a resume, references, letters of recommendation and writing samples such as legal briefs, opinions and pleadings.
The deadline to submit applications and other documentation is March 2. They can be mailed to the Mahoning County Republican Party, P.O. Box 9012, Youngstown, Ohio 44513, or delivered to party headquarters at 8381 Market St. in Boardman. Headquarters are open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Candidates will meet with a screening committee after which the names of at least three candidates will be forwarded to Kasich, a Republican, for his consideration. The person chosen by the governor would serve through the end of the year.
The likely candidate selected by Kasich will be either of the two Republicans running for the seat in the May 8 primary.
Those candidates are Kathleen Bartlett of North Jackson, a Columbiana County Common Pleas Court magistrate, and Damian DeGenova of Poland, a Struthers Municipal Court magistrate.
The winner of the Republican primary would face the victor in the five-person Democratic primary in the November general election.
The position pays $152,850 annually.
The 7th District includes Mahoning, Columbiana, Belmont, Carroll, Harrison, Jefferson, Monroe and Noble counties.
The appeals position was vacated Jan. 26 by DeGenaro, who was selected to fill an unexpired term on the Ohio Supreme Court. She is the lone Republican candidate for that position on the state’s highest court.
