CLASSES

FUNDRAISERS

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Youngstown will host Faith & Family Fun Night with the Youngstown Phantoms at the Covelli Center, 229 E. Front St., Youngstown, at 7 p.m. Thursday. The event will include hockey, intermission activities and more. Proceeds will benefit Catholic Charities’ programs and services. Tickets are $14 each, and Catholic Charities will receive $4 from every ticket sold. St. Joseph the Provider Church will sponsor the Stacks for Soroka annual pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. March 4 at the church hall, 633 Porter Ave., Campbell. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 children under 10. Menu includes pancakes, sausage and beverages. There also will be a 50-50 raffle and bake sale. Tickets will be sold at the door.

St. David's Society of Youngstown will host its 127th annual St. David’s Day banquet in honor of the patron saint of Wales at 2:30 p.m. March 3 at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon St., Canfield. The hall will be decorated with Welsh flags, shields, banners, likenesses of St. David and daffodils, the national flower of Wales. There will be food, entertainment by “The Youngstown Connection,” speakers and group singing in the Welsh tradition as well as toasts to St. David, Wales and the United States. Boardman Lions Club will host its annual Night at the Races fundraiser March 3 at the Operating Engineers Hall, 291 Mcclurg Road. Doors open at 6 p.m. with races beginning at 7. The $15 entrance fee includes an all-you-can-eat buffet sponsored by area restaurants, beer and non-alcoholic beverages. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance from club members. The event will feature a 50-50 raffle, basket raffle and silent auction with baskets donated from area restaurants and specialty shops. Proceeds will support the annual Coats for Kids Project, eyeglass purchases and exams for needy residents, maintenance of flower gardens for township welcome signs, two scholarships for seniors and the purchase of trees for fourth-grade students. Churchill United Methodist Church, 189 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, Liberty, is hosting its “Grief Share” program for all who have suffered a loss. Classes begin at 6 p.m. and take place every Thursday through April 19. The meetings will take place on the second floor of the church’s educational building.

Youngstown Chapter of the Links Inc. will host a Black Diamond reception and viewing of “Dads Do Matter” from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Squaw Creek Country Club, 761 Youngstown-Kingsville Road SE, Vienna. The video is a response to efforts to reduce the high infant mortality rate in Youngstown and surrounding area, and to encourage fathers to be active in the lives of their children. Mayor Jamael Tito Brown and Leigh Greene, director of the minority health division of the Youngstown City Health District, will be available to provide suggestions about ways and resources to facilitate fathers’ involvement. Circle of Friends Foundation's Night at the Races will take place Saturday at St. Mary Assumption Social Center, 356 S. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown. Mahoning Valley Historical Society will host its sixth annual Cookie Table and Cocktails event from 6 to 10 p.m.Saturday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Social Hall, 343 Via Mt. Carmel, Youngstown. The event is being organized by the Young Leaders Advisory Board, a group within the MVHS comprised of members who are promoting MVHS programming beyond the museum sites and in the community. The purpose is to raise funds for ongoing exhibits and educational programming at the Tyler History Center. Bakers still are being accepted and need to provide eight to 12 dozen cookies and will receive one free ticket to the event. Bakers can sign up at www.mahoninghistory.org. Sutliff Museum is displaying a collection of teapots that features ceramic and stoneware teapots collected from all over the world, including Taiwan and Japan. This exhibit is open through April. An exhibit on hygiene of the Victorian era opened in February. The museum is on the second floor of the Warren Trumbull County Library, 444 Mahoning Ave., Warren. Suzie's Dogs & Drafts, 34 N. Phelps St., Youngstown, in cooperation with the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, is sponsoring a “donate a hot dog” campaign in hopes of providing food to the area’s homeless population. Throughout the year, Suzie’s customers can donate a hot dog for the hungry and write a note of support. Donations will be matched dog-for-dog by the restaurant. On the second Wednesday of every month, employees will provide a meal and bring all the notes for the overnight residents and meal visitors at the Rescue Mission. The goal is food for the body and encouragement for the spirit. The project is inspired by the shooting death last November of Colin Brown. Brown worked in the restaurant industry, managing newly opened restaurants and helping get them off the ground. He was a volunteer with the Common Wealth Kitchen Incubator in Youngstown, was known for his pay it forward attitude and always helping those in need.

TRIPS AND TOURS

AARP 4611 East, Youngstown, will host an overnight trip to Lancaster, Pa., April 6 and 7 to the Sight & Sound Millenium Theatre to see the production of “Jesus.” Cost is $300 for double occupancy with the first payment of $50 due with reservation. A.C.T.I.O.N. and the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. are sponsoring a free bus trip to Columbia, S.C., to confront Vision Property Management about its housing practices in the city. Junior League of Youngstown will host a round trip from Youngstown to New York City from April 13 to 15. Tickets are available until March 14, and payment plans will be accepted but must be paid in full by March 14. Tickets are transferable if unable to attend. No cash refunds will be issued. All minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Mineral Ridge Alumni Association is sponsoring a Rivers Casino bus trip to Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Cost is $35 with $20/slots plus $5 food bonus. Photo ID required at the casino. The bus will leave at 9 a.m. from St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 3504 state Route 46, Mineral Ridge. Arrive by 8:30 a.m. for complimentary coffee and doughnuts. Payment is required in advance with checks made payable to Mineral Ridge Alumni Association, P.O. Box 191, Mineral Ridge, OH 44440. Proceeds will benefit the scholarship fund.
