Penguins 5, Blue Jackets 2

COLUMBUS

Riley Sheahan scored two goals in the first period, rookie Tristan Jarry had 35 saves and Pittsburgh beat the Columbus. Jake Guentzel had a goal and two assists, and Brian Dumoulin and Zach Aston-Reese also scored for the Penguins. They have won five straight and 10 of their last 12. The win in front of a sellout crowd at Nationwide Arena moved them past Washington into first place in the Metropolitan Division. The 22-year-old Jarry played well standing in for starter Matt Murray, who got a rest as Pittsburgh played the second leg of a back-to-back and its third game in four days. It was Jarry’s first NHL action in a month after going 3-0 in three starts for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL. Artemi Panarin and Alexander Wennberg scored, and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 18 shots for the Blue Jackets. They have lost two straight and seven of the last nine. In what is becoming the norm lately, Columbus outshot its opponent (37-23) but couldn’t score enough to win. The Blue Jackets lead the NHL in shots per game but are lingering near the bottom of the division. The Penguins had just seven shots in the first period but scored on three of them. Sheahan got credit for his seventh goal of the season when he redirected a shot from Jamie Oleksiak. Later in the first, Dumoulin scored with a slap shot from the left point off a beautiful no-look drop pass from Evgeni Malkin. Three minutes later, Panarin tapped in his 16th goal of the season, set up by Cam Atkinson, to make it 2-1. Sheahan got his second tally of the game with 8:31 left in the first. Bobrovsky got a piece of the wrist shot from top of the right circle but couldn’t keep it out of the net. Aston-Reese made it 4-1 when he tipped in a rebound off Zach Werenski’s skate in traffic 9:29 into the second. The Blue Jackets seemed to come out with a little more juice in the third period, and Wennberg, open in front of the goal, swept in a Boone Jenner pass 2:21 into the frame. But they couldn’t sustain it. Guentzel topped it off for Pittsburgh with 5:51 left.

Oilers 4, Avalanche 2

DENVER

Connor McDavid had his third hat trick of the season and Edmonton beat Colorado to snap a six-game losing streak. McDavid has 11 goals in the last nine games and two hat tricks. His first two goals tied it, and the third was into an empty net with 1:26 left. He has five goals in two games against Colorado this season. Ryan Strome also scored, and Cam Talbot had 24 saves to help the Oilers snap Colorado’s 10-game home winning streak. Tyson Jost and Alexander Kerfoot scored for the Avalanche.

Maple Leafs 3, Red Wings 2

DETROIT

Auston Matthews scored with 30.2 seconds left to push Toronto past Detroit. Matthews took William Nylander’s pass and snapped a high shot into the roof of the net from a sharp angle for his 27th goal of the season, but just his fourth winner. James van Riemsdyk and Mitch Marner also scored for Toronto, and Curtis McElhinney made 27 saves. Anthony Mantha and Henrik Zetterberg scored for Detroit.

Flyers 7, Rangers 4

NEW YORK

Travis Konecny broke a tie late in the second period and Alex Lyon made 25 saves in relief to help Philadelphia beat New York. Claude Giroux and Jori Lehtera scored in the third to finish off the win, Lyon’s first in the NHL. Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist allowed all seven goals. Andrew MacDonald, Scott Laughton, Brandon Manning and Nolan Patrick also scored for the Philadelphia. The Flyers have six of seven and are 22-8-3 since Dec. 4. They have won five in a row in the road. Kevin Hayes, Rick Nash, Mats Zuccarello and Peter Holland scored for New York.

Sharks 5, Stars 2

SAN JOSE, CALIF.

Mikkel Boedker scored twice in San Jose’s four-goal first period and the Sharks beat Dallas for their fourth victory in five games.Joe Pavelski, Melker Karlsson and Justin Braun also scored and Martin Jones made 26 saves. Gemel Smith and Tyler Pitlick scored for Dallas. Ben Bishop was chased after allowing four goals on five shots, and Kari Lehtonen made 22 saves in relief. The Stars had won six of their previous seven.

Devils 3, Hurricanes 2, OT

RALEIGH, N.C.

Taylor Hall scored on a rebound with 22 seconds left in overtime to lift New Jersey past Carolina and extend his NHL-best points streak to 11 games. Keith Kinkaid stopped 40 shots, and Nico Hischier and Pavel Zacha added goals. Teuvo Teravainen and Jeff Skinner scored for Carolina.
