MCCTC volunteers to equip cars for kids

Volunteers will help equip a fleet of cars for nine local children to be built at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road, at 8:30 a.m. Saturday as part of the third annual “Go Baby Go” workshop. The workshop provides modified, ride-on cars for young children, age 1 to 5, with mobility impairments. Each car is custom built for the child’s needs and helps promote mobility. The cars are specially modified to accommodate physical disabilities, including cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and spina bifida.

Children will drive on the racetrack about 11 a.m. and then take the cars home.

The Magic of Michael Foundation, whose mission is to “Inspire, empower and provide hope to families enduring the curve balls of life,” is making this year’s event possible.

Volunteers include electricians, occupational therapists, physical therapists and teachers. Students in Walter Barber’s engineering class at MCCTC as well as Youngstown State University’s physical therapy students will participate. The Valley STEM School at MCCTC is designing decals for the cars.
