Union Elementary had a week dedicated for their Scholastic Book Fair from Jan. 29 until Feb. 2.
Classes had a chance to peruse the products and buy the merchandise throughout the day. The school also hosted a Grandparents Night on Feb. 1 for the book fair.
The funds raised through the book fair will go back to the school. Scholastic will also give the school a chance to purchase books at a discounted price with the money raised.
The school’s PTO organized the event on the school’s stage. PTO members Liz Vilicka, the chair for the book fair, and Jen Stabi set up the books and other items on the stage.
The parents received help from other PTO members throughout the day as the classes visited the fair. In all, 45 PTO volunteers helped Vilicka and Stabi make the book fair a success.
The PTO placed the books in different sections. These sections included picture books, easy reading, chapter books, middle grade books, graphic novels, preschooler books and a creative section. The books in the creative section taught children how to make crafts and other items, such as homemade bath bombs.
Scholastic offered a number of different books, such as ones based around pop culture franchises like “Star Wars” and the Lego movies. They had classic children’s novels such as Madeleine L’Engle’s “A Wrinkle in Time“ and Louis Sachar’s “Holes.“ Students could also add to their series collections, such as books from R.L. Stine’s “Goosebumps” and Nick Bruel’s “Bad Kitty“ series.
Along with books, the fair also offered miscellaneous items. These items included bookmarks, handheld maze toys and pencils.
The Grandparents Night took place on Thursday during the week. The school pulled back the divider between the stage and gymnasium, so the students and their grandparents could move freely between activities in the gym and the book fair on the stage.
The activities at the Grandparents Night included a photo station with props, a craft table and a snack table. New Lease on Life, an animal rescue in Struthers, brought cats, rabbits and dogs for the families to play with and pet.
