Young mother denied early release again in child-endangering case

A judge has again denied early release from prison to Carlisa Davis, convicted of not protecting her two children, age 21 months and 9 months, from opiates.

Davis, 20, was sentenced to 21/2 years in prison in January 2017 after being convicted at trial of two counts of child endangering after both children had to be hospitalized for drug overdoses Feb. 2, 2016.

Testimony during the trial indicated that others in the house where Davis and the children lived were selling drugs out of the house and the children might have gotten into them.

She failed to tell officials at the hospital a drug overdose was a possibility, which delayed treatment of the children, according to trial testimony.

Judge W. Wyatt McKay of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court denied her first request for early release in July.

Davis filed an appeal of her sentence a year ago but dropped the appeal last month.

Last week, Judge McKay denied early release again, saying he had reviewed her request, which she filed herself, and found the request “not well-taken and is hereby denied without a hearing.” He ordered her to “continue to serve the sentence previously imposed by this court.”
