American Association of University Women Youngstown Branch is partnering during Women’s History Month with the League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown and will show “The Iron-Jawed Angels,” a 2004 film about American suffragists of the 1910s. The film will be shown at 6 p.m. March 5 in the Gathering Room of Ohio Living at Park Vista, 1216 Fifth Ave. Branch members also have been invited to attend the 2018 Hall of Fame dinner of the League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown honoring new Hall of Fame inductees. The dinner will take place at the YWCA, 25 W. Rayen Ave. Youngstown, at 5:30 p.m. March 20. Reservations are required. Austintown Fitch High School Class of 1957 will meet for breakfast at 9:30 a.m. at Denny’s in Austintown. Class will meet the first Tuesday of each month beginning March 6.
Hubbard High School Class of 1961 will host its 75th birthday party Aug. 17 and 18, with a social to begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 17 at the New Manhattan, 7262 Hubbard-Masury Road. A picnic will take place at noon Aug. 18 at Harding Park with lunch at 1 p.m. Cost is $5 per person which can be paid the day of the event. Friends of the Mahoning River will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Oak Hill Collaborative, 507 Oak Hill Ave., Youngstown. Parking is in the rear of the building. The group is celebrating a grant awarded by Neighborhood SUCCESS, a program of The Raymond John Wean Foundation to be used at the upcoming seventh annual RiverFest at the B&O Station on June 2. Another topic of discussion will be the Celebratory Paddle to take place June 9 from the newly constructed Girard Launch, which is in collaboration with the Trumbull Canoe Trails. Youngstown Council of Catholic Nurses will attend the White Mass at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Columba Cathedral, 159 W. Rayen Ave. The White Mass celebrates and recognizes healthcare professionals. A reception will take place afterward in the Cathedral hall.
DANCES
The Friendly Squares will host its monthly square dance from 7:30 to 10 p.m. March 10 at the Niles SCOPE Center, 14 E. State St., Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller, and Frankie Hammond will call line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Poland Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Little Red Schoolhouse, 4515 Center Road. The program will follow at 7:30 p.m. and will feature local historian Thomas G. Welsh, Ph.D., who also is co-author of “The Classic Restaurants of Youngstown.” Welsh’s presentation will be a walk down memory lane about famous Youngstown restaurants. Copies of the book will be available for sale. The 2018 membership drive is under way. Renewal and new membership dues are $10 per person. William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kravitz’s Deli meeting room, 3135 Belmont Ave. Rick Rowlands, founder of the Youngstown Steel Heritage Museum, will share steel industry history and his museums’s collection, which includes the Tod Engine. Cost is $5 for members and $6 for nonmembers. A 50-50 raffle will take place and will benefit the society’s education mission. The program is open to the public. Reservations are suggested. SUPPORT GROUPS
Codependency and Grief Support Group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the care center of the Kelley-Robb-Cummins Funeral Home, North Main St., Hubbard. The support group was formed to reach out to help families who have lost loved ones to alcohol or substance abuse.
Crossroads Hospice Charitable Foundation is sponsoring a grief support group to help people move beyond the pain of any loss and achieve healing. Each meeting is facilitated by certified grief recovery specialists and is free of charge. The meeting will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Touch Heaven Church, 10 Skyline Drive, Canfield. Good Hope Lutheran Church, 98 Homestead Drive, Boardman, will host a 13-week grief support series through the GriefShare ministry from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays through May 1. The GriefShare team provides a safe, understanding place for individuals to move through their personal grief journeys. Participants need not be church members. Each session is self-contained, so participants may enter at any session. Each session will include videos featuring some of the nation’s foremost experts on grief recovery. Sessions also include small group support and a workbook for personal study. Participants are welcome to share stories, but are never forced. Attendance at consecutive sessions is encouraged for maximum benefit. Cost is $20. Checks should be made payable to Good Hope. Scholarships also are available at registration.
