The Committee to Support Canfield Schools hosted its second annual Cardinal Chili Cook-off in the Canfield High School cafeteria on Feb. 9. Thirteen local restaurants, businesses, clubs and individuals entered their chili in the contest.
There were three categories for judging, hot and spicy, thick and hearty and unconventional. A people’s choice award was also voted on by all attendees. A cash prize of $20 and medals were awarded to the winner of each category.
Cardinal Chili Cook-off entrants included Cardinal Joint Fire District, Cocca’s Pizza, Nicolinni’s (Patrick Lavanty), The Phoenix Fire Grill and Bar, Dave Mullane, CHS Student Council, Alex Geordan, CHS Food and Nutrition Class, CHS Food Service, David Wilkeson, Beth Schutz and Sabrina Eaton, Nicolinni’s (Stephanie Lavanty) and Mrs. Dance’s eighth-grade Nutrition Class.
Serving as judges were Billy Ludt and Nikos Frazier of the Youngstown Vindicator. Judging criteria included, aroma, consistency, appearance, taste and aftertaste.
For a second year, the judges named Cocca’s Pizza as the winner of the Thick and Hearty category and Alex Geordan was named winner of the Hot and Spicy category. The mother-daughter team of Beth Schutz and Sabrina Eaton took home the top prize in the Unconventional category, serving a Cincinnati-style chili.
When the judging was completed, the dinner was opened to the community. The menu included all-you-can-eat chili, bread, dessert and beverage. Cocca’s Pizza donated bread sticks, Kim’s Confections donated desserts, Canfield PTO donated bottled water and the CHS cafeteria provided corn bread.
Canfield High School student council members were on hand to help to set up, serve chili to the judges and help with clean up.
The event was planned to coincide with the CHS boys basketball game versus Lakeside.
