Forever Young book club to host February meeting
If you love reading YA books, join the Canfield library on Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. where they will be reading and discussing a different young adult book every month. This month, the discussion will be on “Dividing Eden” by Joelle Charbonneau. This book club is for adults.
Create DIY wall art
Come create a unique work of art at the Canfield library on Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. This easy DIY project is a fun way for people of all skill levels to create their own work of art inspired by designer prints, using old common household items. Registration is required as space is limited. This program is for adults.
Decorate marshmallows at the library
Enjoy decorating giant marshmallows with candy and painted icing faces at the Canfield library Feb. 24 at 2:30 p.m. Mega marshmallows are as much fun to create and give as gifts, as they are to eat. This program is for ages 9-12.
Art fair at the library
Enjoy art work by students from the Canfield Schools at the Canfield library. The reception will be Feb. 22. from 6-8 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and it is open to the public. Artwork will be on display during library hours Feb. 22–24, and from 1-3 p.m on Feb. 25.
Local church to host chili cook-off
Canfield Presbyterian Church will host a chili cook-off luncheon on Feb. 25 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the church, located at 140 West Main St. in Canfield (handicap accessible). The menu includes all-you-can-eat chili, hot dogs and dessert. Carry out is available. The cost is $7 and the event is open to the public. It also includes a celebration of gifts silent auction until 1 p.m. featuring goods and services created by church members including artwork, baked goods, music lessons, handyman services and more. 80’s movie night at the library
Join the Canfield library on Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. for a blast from the past to relive classic movies from the 80’s. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks at this event is for adults and teens. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. The movie will be either a PG or PG-13 rating.
Microsoft Word class 2
Join the Canfield library for part 2 of Beginner’s Basic Microsoft Word on Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. The class will cover topics such as inserting tables, WordArt and page numbers. Mah-Jongg for beginners
Learn to play Mah-Jongg in this 3-week class series. The next meeting is on Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Canfield library. Join the Canfield library’s 2018 Reading Challenge to “read around the Canfield Library Book Club Room.” Read six titles from the Book Club room for the Winter Challenge through March 31 and fill out the Reading Challenge form as an entry into a drawing for a Reader’s Prize Pack. E-books and audiobooks of book club titles acceptable. All entries must be submitted by March 31; winner drawn on April 4. One entry per person. This event is for adults.
Public invited to Audubon program
Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “Birding Within 90 Minutes of Boardman” at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27 at the Canfield library. Jeff Harvey, president of the local Audubon chapter, will present a program on the many great birding locations within our area and what birds can be found.
Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for Feb. 19
The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be on Feb. 19 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W Main Street in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Have coffee with the Master Gardeners
If you want to learn how to collect your own sap and follow the process clear to your pancakes or waffles, join the Master Gardeners for coffee on Feb. 26. This program will start at 9:30 a.m. with refreshments and will continue with an educational program from 10 a.m. until noon. Program speaker Carolyn Fankhauser, Mahoning County Master Gardener Volunteer, will discuss the maple syrup making process and will show participants how to use the information at home. Registration for this event is $15, which includes coffee, a light breakfast and program handouts. Registration can be mailed or dropped off at Mahoning County Extension, 490 S. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Mahoning County 4-H community to offer open house
If you want to learn more about the countless opportunities in Mahoning County 4-H?, the 4-H open house is an evening full of information about 4-H and how to get involved. 4-H provides many opportunities for community service and leadership through livestock projects, cooking, sewing, robotics and more. Participants will be able to see and experience some of the more than 200 projects 4-H has to offer. 4-H alumni, members and volunteers will be present to answer any questions and share their personal experiences with 4-H. Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
Celebrate the arts at Canfield Presbyterian Church
Celebrate the arts submitted by amateur and professional artists that showcase their painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and woodworking at Canfield Presbyterian Church. Viewings will be Feb. 18 from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
Cardinal Mooney opens admissions with winter open house and new student referral program
Cardinal Mooney High School, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, is kicking off the 2018-19 admissions season with a new student referral program. Current Mooney families and employees are encouraged to refer students from qualifying public and charter schools to apply for admissions. Interested applicants can learn more about the program at Mooney’s winter open house, set for Feb. 4 from 1-4 p.m. at the school. Gotta Move story time presented at the library
Join the Canfield library every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m. for the Gotta Move story time. This program is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join them for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Tales and Talk for 2’s and 3’s announced for February
Join the Canfield library every Tuesday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the Canfield library every Thursday in February at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Play Bookopoly at the library
Teens and adults, play Bookopoly for fun and prizes. Pick up your game board and instructions at any branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and play Bookopoly from Jan. 1 through March 31. Work your way around the game board by completing tasks, such as checking out a book, visiting our Pop-up Library or getting out into the community. Completing color sets earns you an entry slip for a prize drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. Complete the entire board to enter into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. The contest ends March 31 and all prizes will be awarded on April 16.

Junior League hosts New York trip
The Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a round trip from Youngstown to New York City April 13-15. Spend the day as you wish for your selection of Broadway plays, shopping, sightseeing and dining. The “NYE Ball Drop” price is $139 per person if paid in full by Dec. 31 and $149 per person without a discount. Payment plans are accepted and must be paid in full by March 14 and will be $149 per person. Tickets are available until March 14 for the trip. Your ticket is transferable in the event you are unable to attend. No cash refunds will be issued. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. Give a high five to the dogs
Come and read to the Canfield library’s favorite therapy dogs. Give them a “High Five” to welcome them to the library. Bring your own book, or the library will find one for you. School aged children can read to the therapy dogs the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. Therapy dogs provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, local Pet Therapy group.
The Mahoning Valley Corvettes joins in with Salem car cruise for event
The call to take over The Salem Super cruise, Salem’s largest annual event attracting thousands, was recently answered by The Mahoning Valley Corvettes. The non-profit car club dates back to 1962 including members from every surrounding community and Salem. Many of the club members have enjoyed the Salem Super Cruise and will now partner with the City of Salem to put on the event entering its 14th year. The Salem Super Cruise is open to all cars and trucks, not just Corvettes. Motorcycles are also welcome. The weekend benefits the Second Harvest Foodbank, which feeds many hungry local families. The event will take place June 7-10 and will feature activities, some free, including a parade, car show, food, live bands and more. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes look forward to partnering with the City of Salem to provide a this weekend for the entire family.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
