Foster home free informational luncheon

Facing a shortage of licensed foster homes for Mahoning County children, Mahoning County Children Services is offering a free informational luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 24 at Mahoning County Children Services, 222 W. Federal St.

Attendees can learn about fostering and adopting, talk to licensed foster parents and participate in a question-and-answer session. Registration is required. Call 330-941-8711.

Help the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley

To help the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley, on Wednesday Dr. Ronald Ruscitti is seeking new patients to receive a free chiropractic consult, exam and report of findings, all for a $20 donation to the mission.

Dr. Elisabeth H. Young

ROOTSTOWN

Northeast Ohio Medical University alumna Dr. Elisabeth H. Young, M.D., has been appointed vice president for health affairs and dean of NEOMED’s College of Medicine.

Young, trained in internal medicine and rheumatology and hospice and palliative care medicine, was associate medical director at Mercy Health Youngstown, Hospice of the Valley from 2010 to 2015. Before that, she was in private solo rheumatology practice for 13 years and served eight years as the director of graduate medical education at Mercy Health Youngstown.

An Akron native, Young is the first graduate of NEOMED to serve in the role of dean of the College of Medicine at NEOMED. A professor of internal medicine, she was interim vice president for health affairs and dean of the College of Medicine for the past year; and previously was vice dean of the College of Medicine.

A master teacher, Young has been a faculty member in the College of Medicine since 1990, and has more than 20 years of patient care experience and nearly 30 years teaching.

Caregiver Support

NEW CASTLE, PA.

Rhodes Estates Senior Living and Southern Care Hospice are introducing a Caregiver Support Group in the New Castle area with in-house entertainment for loved ones.

Starting Feb. 20, from 6 to 7 p.m., the support group will meet the third Tuesday of each month, through July, at Rhodes Estates Senior Living, 318 Rhodes Place. The program is free to caregivers living at home with a loved one with any type of health condition.

The Caregiver Support Group will feature guest speakers and topics led by Maggie Kline and Lisa Pardick, both of Southern Care Hospice. The first group topic is “Memory Players and the Effects of Music on the brain.” Members of this group will have an opportunity to share stories, learn new coping skills, and receive education on all types of dementias.

Joint Pain Program

Orthopaedic Surgeon Dominic J. Peters, M.D., is offering a program, “Living With Joint Pain?,” from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 1 in the multipurpose room of the D.D. & Velma Davis YMCA, 45 McClurg Road.

Peters will present an overview of the causes of hip and knee pain, and discuss a range of treatment options from managing joint pain symptoms at home to his advanced anterior hip replacement technique.
