Salinas booked for bout in Campbell

A 10-bout, pro-am boxing card featuring Alejandro “Popo” Salinas is set for March 24 at St. Lucy’s Palermo Banquet Center, 394 Tenney Ave.

Presented by trainer Jack Loew of South Side Boxing Club, “March Madness” will feature four professional and six amateur pairings.

Salinas (9-1, 8 KOs), who has won seven consecutive bouts, is coming off a nationally televised unanimous decision over Duarn Vue at the Cannery Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas on Sept. 26.

He will meet lefty Reggie Barnett (6-1, 2 KOs) of the Netherlands (fighting out of Chesapeake, V a.) for the vacant USA Mid-American super featherweight title.

“Popo is ready to go and this card is going to be as exciting as it gets,” Loew said. “Barnett is a lefty and he definitely poses a problem for us.

“I want to fight a good lefthander right now because it is going to happen down the road,” Loew said. “This will be an excellent test for Popo and a tough fight for both boxers.”

Barnett’s loss came at the hands of two-time national amateur champion Gerald Tucker (7-0-1, 3 KOs), a unanimous decision in 2016 at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, Va.

Since then, he has reeled off three straight wins against undefeated opponents

“They will be fighting for the vacant USA Mid-American super featherweight belt and although it is a small belt, it is motivation because both fighters want to win,” Loew said. “Anytime you can put a piece of hardware around your waist, it seems to draw out the best in a fighter.”

Also on the professional card is Anthony Taylor (4-2, KO), a Warren southpaw and 112-pound hopeful. Also fighting will be Alante Green (2-0-1, 2 KOs) of Cleveland and 147-pounder David Rodriguez of Akron.

Taylor, who fights out of South Side Boxing Club, won his first four professional pairings but is looking to end a two-fight losing streak. He last took a TKO loss to Santos Vasquez last May at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nev.

Green is a power-puncher coming off a win by TKO over Antwan Taylor in November at the Cleveland’s Masonic Arts and Performing Center.

Rodriguez, a veteran with over 150 amateur fights, is making his professional debut.

Among the amateurs set to go will be South Side Boxing Club’s Tony Scandy and Keith Burnside, Jr., a senior at Struthers High School who is trained by his father, Keith, Sr. He’s fighting out of Burnside Athletic Club.

Burnside is a 150-pounder while Scandy fights at 178 pounds.

Ringside seats cost $50, general admission tickets cost $25 each with tables of eight going for $400.

Four Gold sponsorships are available for $1,000, which includes name on a corner cushion, name on a banner, VIP table of eight, name on all advertisements and bout sheets.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the first fight beginning at 7:30 p.m.
