Paczki and polka party at Kravitz Deli

Staff report

LIBERTY

The fifth annual Paczki, Polkas and Piwo party will take place Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Kravitz Deli, 3135 Belmont Ave.

It will feature the traditional paczki – a Polish-style doughnut – filled with a choice of apricot, lekvar, custard and rose hip jam. Plain and poppyseed paczki will also be available.

Prices are $2 per paczki, $10 for six, and $18 for a dozen.

Preorders are being accepted at polishyoungstown.org and at all Kravitz locations.

Paczki will also be sold at the Kravitz locations at Poland Library and Fellows Riverside Gardens.

The event – which falls on Fat Tuesday – is the last chance to indulge before Lent. It will also include Polish-inspired specialty foods and corned beef sandwiches, plus piwo (Polish for beer).

Music, including DJ Larry Walk from the Happy Polkaland show at lunchtime, and the Paczki All-Star Polka Band from 5-8 p.m. – and folk dancers will add to the entertainment.

Although they look like jelly doughnuts, paczki are made from especially rich dough containing eggs, fats, sugar and milk.
