Canfield boys dominate D-II sectional
AKRON
Canfield won the boys team title largely on the strength of two first-place relay performances in the Division II sectional meet on Friday at the University of Akron’s Ocasek Natatorium.
Canfield won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays and also had two individuals place second, two more place third and two others place fourth.
The top four finishers in each race qualify for districts. Other at-large qualifiers will be announced on Sunday.
Canfield’s 200 freestyle relay team of Bobby Kutsch, Cullen Brady, Jason Paris and Kamran Sarac won with a time of 1:28.73. The same four teamed to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:16.795.
Kutsch also was second in the 500 freestyle (5:02.85) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:51.05). Sarac was second in the 50 freestyle (21.88) and third in the 100 butterfly (53.40). Paris was third in the 50 freestyle (22.34). Brady was fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:07.40).
The Canfield 200 medley relay team of Matthew Peckman, Bobby DeDomenico, Joe Klepec and James Dietz was third in a time of 1:46.33.
Poland’s Nico Lattanzio was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.94).
In girls competition, Liberty freshman Olivia Benson qualified third in two events. She swam the 50 freestyle in 25.57 and the 100 freestyle in 57.50.

Erie Cathedral Preparatory 78, Ursuline 58

Cathedral Preparatory outscored the 42-18 in the second and third quarters. Cathedral Prep’s Aaron McBride scored 24 to led all scorers. Ursuline’s RJ Clark led the Irish with 22 points and Devan Keevey scored 18.

The Cardinals led Lakeside 27-9 at halftime. Canfield’s Ian McGraw led all scorers with 13 points. Zach Tinkey and Ethan Kalina scored 10 points each for Canfield. Ceon Howell led Lakeside with 11 points.
Champion 67, Girard 58
GIRARD
Chase Wheelock made six of Champion’s nine 3-pointers. Wheelock finished with a game-high 27 points. Teammate Drake Batcho scored 25. Austin Clausell and David Blackman scored 16 points each for Girard.

HUBBARD
Four players scored in double figures as the Eagles beat the Falcons. Nick Ferrara and Davion Daniels each had 15 points, Cam Resatar had 14 and Shannon Slovesko added 11. Zak Pasanen led all scorers with 20 points for Jefferson.

BEAVER TOWNSHIP
Liberty couldn’t stop South Range’s Jaxon Anderson and Chris Brooks. Anderson led all scorers with 22 points and Brooks 18. Dra Rushton scored 15 to lead Liberty.

BROOKFIELD
Chris Rankin scored a game-high 23 points to lead Newton Falls. Preston Rapczak (14 points) and Gage Friend (11) also reached double figures for the Tigers. Brookfield was led by Conner Stevens with 21 points. Nate Smoot added 16 points and Jon Hiner netted 12 for the Warriors.
Struthers 67, Lakeview 48
CORTLAND
Isaiah Torrence led Struthers (10-10) with 17 points. Carson Ryan added 16 points and Kevin Traylor chipped in with 15 for the Wildcats. Torrence made five 3-pointers while Traylor made three. Lakeview (13-6) was led by Daniel Evans with 16 points. Evans made four 3-pointers.

LOWELLVILLE
Lowellville’s Matt Hvisdak led all scorers with 26 points. Alex Mamula-Zarlingo scored 18 for the Rockets while Nate Solak scored 11. Parker Hydrick led United with 11 points, nine rebounds, five steals and six assists.
McDonald 92, Columbiana 70
COLUMBIANA
McDonald used a 28-9 third quarter to pull away from Columbiana, after the Clippers trailed just 35-32 at halftime. Braedon Poole scored 31 to lead McDonald. Zach Rasile added 19 points, Josh Celli had 18 and Riko Rodriguez and Matthew Beedle had 13 and 11 points respectively for the Blue Devils. Columbiana was led by Jared Wilson with 26 points, including five 3-pointers.
Lisbon 74, Mineral Ridge 55
LISBON
Justin Sweeney poured in 38 points, including the 1,000th of his career, for the Blue Devils (12-6). He’s the second Lisbon junior to reach the milestone — Austin Rutecki was the other in 2015. Sweeney also made eight rebounds, six assists and five steals. He now has 1,014 career points. Branson Brownfield scored 20 points and made nine rebounds and three steals. For the Rams, Koby Zupko led with 16 points. Jordan Zupko scored 11 points and Austin Governor 10.

Cole Dezee led Western Reserve (11-6) with 14 points. Jack Cappabianca recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Devils. Crestview (3-15) was led by Scott Murray with 17 points and Drake Golden with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Roman Ferry scored 24 points to lead Leetonia (4-14). Brock Simpson added 12 points and Tommy Kornbau netted 10 for the Bears. Gabe Lanzer led Sebring (7-12) with 17 points and Joey Clark had 16 for the Trojans.
