Providing beauty services to take state boards
CANFIELD
Mahoning County Career and Technical Center students provided beauty services to raise funds for their Ohio State Board of Cosmetology exams.
Lisa Argiro, MCCTC cosmetology instructor, said the Thursday Hair and Nail-a-thon is a great fundraiser for students for many reasons.
“It helps offset the costs of the state board [exam], food, hotel, travel and more,” she explained.
Senior students take a class trip to Columbus to take their Ohio State Board of Cosmetology exams.
The $10 salon services included haircuts, blow drying, styling and manicures.
Argiro said the event also helps students get real-life experience with clients.
“It’s fun watching them work with and interact with live clients,” she said.
Brandy McGrath, junior cosmetology student, said she enjoys having the opportunity to work on new clients.
“Meeting new people is a whole new experience, as well as making those people feel good about themselves, is a true thrill,” she said.
Fellow cosmetology junior Gloria Adames echoed McGrath’s sentiment.
“We get to meet each others’ families that come in to support us and get to have clients assigned to us. So we’re not only working with ourselves, but also [work with] real-life clients that we have the opportunity to get to know,” Adames said.
“It’s just nice, as a teacher, to see it all fall into place,” Argiro added.
In addition to getting to know new clients, Adames said the event allows cosmetology students to better get to know one another.
“It makes us closer as a class and it’s a fun experience,” she said.
The MCCTC Salon, 7300 N. Palmyra Road, also will offer extended hours from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
