Cold Weather Running Workshop
The Center for Physical Health will be hosting a workshop on Feb. 15. at 6:30 p.m. focusing on cold weather running tactics to prevent injury, as well as how to respond in the event of injury. The class will be led by Marybeth Romeo, Licensed Physical Therapist and owner of the Center for Physical Health, which is located at 4137 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite 104, in Canfield. The Cold Weather Running Workshop will help those who are new to running outside get started safely and improve the injury prevention methods for seasoned runners. This workshop will also address how to prevent re-injury during cold weather if you already suffering from a running or other sports-related injuries. The cost of the Cold Weather Running Workshop is free for the community and registration can be done over the phone at 330-286-3850 or by email at office@centerforphysicalhealth.org. Unregistered attendees will be admitted at the door pending available space. Attendees will walk away from this workshop with a working knowledge of how to adequately prepare for cold weather conditions, how to relieve their pain from running, as well as an understanding of the benefits of physical therapy.
Have coffee with the Master Gardeners
If you want to learn how to collect your own sap and follow the process clear to your pancakes or waffles, join the Master Gardeners for coffee on Feb. 26. This program will start at 9:30 a.m. with refreshments and will continue with an educational program from 10 a.m. until noon. Program speaker Carolyn Fankhauser, Mahoning County Master Gardener Volunteer, will discuss the maple syrup making process and will show participants how to use the information at home. Registration for this event is $15, which includes coffee, a light breakfast and program handouts. Registration can be mailed or dropped off at Mahoning County Extension, 490 S. Broad Street, Canfield, Ohio. Seating is limited and is filled on a first come, first serve basis. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Knitting guild to meet on Feb. 13
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A program for knitting an illusion heart dishcloth will be presented. Those wishing to participate are asked to bring two colors of cotton yarn and corresponding needles.
Mahoning County 4-H community to offer open house
If you want to learn more about the countless opportunities in Mahoning County 4-H?, the 4-H open house is an evening full of information about 4-H and how to get involved. 4-H provides many opportunities for community service and leadership through livestock projects, cooking, sewing, robotics and more. Participants will be able to see and experience some of the more than 200 projects 4-H has to offer. 4-H alumni, members and volunteers will be present to answer any questions and share their personal experiences with 4-H. The 4-H community open house is Feb. 15 from 6-8 p.m. at the Mahoning County Extension Office. The Mahoning County Extension Office is located at 490 S. Broad St. in Canfield. Center for Physical Health offers free workshops to community members
The Center for Physical Health will be hosting its first workshops of the year. The first, on Feb. 10 at 9 a.m, will be focused on back pain and sciatica. An additional workshop will take place on Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m. Both workshops are completely free to community members and will be hosted by Marybeth Romeo, a Licensed Physical Therapist. Each workshop will be at their office, located at 4137 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite 104, in Canfield. While the workshops are free, registration is preferred as space is limited. Gathering Place to announce February meeting
The Gathering Place will host it’s next meeting Feb. 12 at 11 a.m. at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield. The program will consist of instructions on using smart phones and a representative from AT&T will be presenting “Smart Phones 101.” In addition, Buckeye Hospice will have a nurse available to provide free blood pressure readings. This will be ongoing at all future monthly meetings. Lunch will be provided following the program. Arrive promptly at 11 a.m. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that is offered on the second Monday of the month every month. Join the Canfield library on Feb. 17 at 1:30 p.m. for games, activities and treats inspired by Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. Create a Valentine, and, of course, take a trip down the Yellow Brick Road. Snacks will be served at this event for children of all ages.
Lego time at the library
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library on Feb. 3 at 2:30 p.m., and again on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
Perler bead craft offered at the library
Children and families are invited to have some fun with Perler beads at the Canfield library on Feb. 10 at 2:30 p.m. These colorful little beads can be arranged into shapes and patterns. With some carefully applied heat (done by an adult) they melt and stick together. Perler beads are very small and do require some fine motor skills to arrange. This program is recommended for children who are ages 5 and up and children must be accompanied by an adult.
Friendly Squares to host February Square Dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance Feb. 10 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. “Valentines” will be the theme for the dance. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Mill Creek American Business Women’s Association to have meeting Feb. 13
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will have its Feb. 13 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes chicken crepes, ham and cheese strata, scrambled eggs, link sausage, bacon, home-fried potatoes, assorted pastries, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee and tea. Cardinal Mooney opens admissions with winter open house and new student referral program
Cardinal Mooney High School, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, is kicking off the 2018-19 admissions season with a new student referral program. Current Mooney families and employees are encouraged to refer students from qualifying public and charter schools to apply for admissions. Celebrate Valentines Day with Friends of Fido
The Mahoning County Dog Pound will be celebrating the “For the Love of Dogs” event with Friends of Fido for the fifth year in a row. Mail a $1 bill along with a Valentine to The Mahoning County Dog Pound, PO Box 14155 Poland, Ohio 44514, to help raise funds to care for the dogs. Gotta Move story time presented at the library
Join the Canfield library every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m. for the Gotta Move story time. This program is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join them for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Tales and Talk for 2’s and 3’s announced for February
Join the Canfield library every Tuesday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the Canfield library every Thursday in February at 10 a.m. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Play Bookopoly at the library
Teens and adults, play Bookopoly for fun and prizes. Pick up your game board and instructions at any branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and play Bookopoly from Jan. 1 through March 31. Work your way around the game board by completing tasks, such as checking out a book, visiting our Pop-up Library or getting out into the community. Completing color sets earns you an entry slip for a prize drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. Complete the entire board to enter into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. The contest ends March 31 and all prizes will be awarded on April 16.
Read around the room
Join the 2018 Reading Challenge to “read around the Canfield library book club room.” Read six titles from the book club room for the winter challenge, from Jan. 1 until March 31, and fill out the Reading Challenge form as an entry into a drawing for a reader’s prize pack. E-books and audiobooks of book club titles are acceptable, and all entries must be submitted by March 31; winner drawn on April 4. One entry per person is permitted at this program for adults.
Junior League hosts New York trip
The Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a round trip from Youngstown to New York City April 13-15. Spend the day as you wish for your selection of Broadway plays, shopping, sightseeing and dining. The “NYE Ball Drop” price is $139 per person if paid in full by Dec. 31 and $149 per person without a discount. Payment plans are accepted and must be paid in full by March 14 and will be $149 per person. Tickets are available until March 14 for the trip. Your ticket is transferable in the event you are unable to attend. No cash refunds will be issued. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. Give a high five to the dogs
Come and read to the Canfield library’s favorite therapy dogs. Give them a “High Five” to welcome them to the library. Bring your own book, or the library will find one for you. School aged children can read to the therapy dogs the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. Therapy dogs provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, local Pet Therapy group.
The Mahoning Valley Corvettes joins in with Salem car cruise for event
The call to take over The Salem Super cruise, Salem’s largest annual event attracting thousands, was recently answered by The Mahoning Valley Corvettes. The non-profit car club dates back to 1962 including members from every surrounding community and Salem. Many of the club members have enjoyed the Salem Super Cruise and will now partner with the City of Salem to put on the event entering its 14th year. The Salem Super Cruise is open to all cars and trucks, not just Corvettes. Motorcycles are also welcome. The weekend benefits the Second Harvest Foodbank, which feeds many hungry local families. The event will take place June 7-10 and will feature activities, some free, including a parade, car show, food, live bands and more. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes look forward to partnering with the City of Salem to provide a this weekend for the entire family.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
