Kindergarten registration announced
Boardman School District will host its Kindergarten Registration Day for the 2018-19 school year on March 8 from 9-11 a.m., 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. in each of the district’s four elementary school offices. Registering early is encouraged, to ensure assignment to your elementary school of residence. Boardman kindergarten is all day. Registration for a new student to the Boardman Local Schools requires parents or guardians to be residents in the Boardman Local School District. Your child must reach age 5 on or before Aug. 1, 2018. Bring the following items: a completed registration form (found online at http://www.boardman.k12.oh.us/), presentation of proof of immunization and completion of the School Hazard Record (proof of your child’s immunization is a physician’s statement or immunization card with dates entered), presentation of official state birth certificate, presentation of at least two proofs of residency forms (homeowner’s tax statement, utility bill, purchase/rental agreement, etc.) and residency affidavit, custody papers if applicable, and the payment of $25 to partially cover the cost of supplies furnished by the school. Classroom space is limited for kindergarten, therefore students may be assigned to a building in the district that is not the school of residence. It is important to register early to ensure assignment to your elementary school of residence.
Bunny open house to be Feb. 10 and 11
F5RS, a nonprofit 501c3 no kill rescue and sanctuary, is having a bunny open house on Feb. 10 and 11 from 12-4 p.m. at their location, 11836 South Ave. in North Lima in the Old School Marketplace, Building E. Adopt a bonded pair in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Adoptable rabbits are already spayed or neutered and usually housetrained. No adoptions will be given without an approved application. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Cardinal Mooney celebrates start of Catholic Schools Week
In celebration of Catholic Schools Week 2018 Cardinal Mooney High School is offering a $100 early application bonus to any prospective family that applies for admissions to the 2018-19 academic year by March 1. Knitting guild to meet on Feb. 13
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A program for knitting an illusion heart dishcloth will be presented. Those wishing to participate are asked to bring two colors of cotton yarn and corresponding needles.
Historian to recall Valley’s steel legacy
Steel museum founder and historian, Rick Rowlands, will review Mahoning Valley’s rich steel industry legacy on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. at Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Avenue in Boardman, for the Boardman Historical Society. The program is part of a new series of BHS public offerings. The presentations are open to the public and admission is free. Reservations are suggested. Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
Join playtime at your library
Prepare for kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. This program is for children who are ages 2-6 and all children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.
Join tales and talks for 2s and 3s
Join the Boardman library every Wednesday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Friendly Squares to host February Square Dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance Feb. 10 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. “Valentines” will be the theme for the dance. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Gather at Apprentice’s Inn
Those with an interest in fantasy games are encouraged to join the beginners Dungeons and Dragons club at the Boardman library on Feb. 21 from 6:30-8 p.m. and join the adventure. Refreshments and snacks are provided at this program for teens in grades 7-12.

The Winter Olympics are in South Korea this year, But the Boardman library is are having its own Winter Olympics on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. Play games, try your best and go for the gold. This program is for children of all ages.
Mill Creek American Business Women’s Association to have meeting Feb. 13
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will have its Feb. 13 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes chicken crepes, ham and cheese strata, scrambled eggs, link sausage, bacon, home-fried potatoes, assorted pastries, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee and tea. Spread the peace at the library
Honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a craft celebrating his vision. Children, adults and teens are invited to make two crafts at the Boardman library during regular library hours so that his vision will be on display at the library and your home.
Celebrate Valentines Day with Friends of Fido
The Mahoning County Dog Pound will be celebrating the “For the Love of Dogs” event with Friends of Fido for the fifth year in a row. Mail a $1 bill along with a Valentine to The Mahoning County Dog Pound, PO Box 14155 Poland, Ohio 44514, to help raise funds to care for the dogs. Boardman Park is now taking reservations for 2018-2019
Boardman Park is currently taking reservations for 2018 and 2019. Reservations can be made online at www.boardmanpark.com, or through the park office by calling 330-726-8105 or visiting the park office at 375 Boardman-Poland Road in the Georgeanna Parker Activity Center. Office hours are 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The park offers four indoor rooms and five seasonal open-air pavilions to accommodate 40-232 guests for occasions such as a graduation party, bridal or baby shower, birthday party, reunion, business meeting or a special family function. If you are planning a wedding, the Gazebo, Maag Outdoor Theatre and St. James Meeting House, Boardman’s most prominent Historical landmark, are popular for ceremonies. Facilities are available for rent year-round. The park also provides a variety of outdoor recreational facilities in close proximity to the reservable facilities, including baseball fields, playgrounds, walking/hiking trails, tennis, pickle ball and sand volleyball courts and a disc golf course.
Father-daughter dance to be at Boardman Park
Boardman Park will be having the 15th annual Father-Daughter Princess Dance at the Lariccia Family Community Center. Fathers or Father figures who have a daughter(s) between the ages of 5-12 can enjoy a memorable evening of dinner, a professional photo, crafts and dancing with their little princess. This semi-formal dance will take place six nights: Feb. 9 and 10 from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 15-17 from 6-9 p.m. and Feb. 18 from 5-8 p.m. Tickets will go on sale Jan. 9. You may purchase your tickets at the park office or by phone 330-726-8105, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., or online at www.boardmanpark.com. Tickets must be purchased in advance as tickets will not be sold at the door. The cost for Boardman residents is $40 per couple and non-residents are $50 per couple. Play Bookopoly at the library
Teens and adults, play Bookopoly for fun and prizes. Pick up your game board and instructions at any branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and play Bookopoly from Jan. 1 through March 31. Work your way around the game board by completing tasks, such as checking out a book, visiting our Pop-up Library or getting out into the community. Completing color sets earns you an entry slip for a prize drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. Complete the entire board to enter into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. The contest ends March 31 and all prizes will be awarded on April 16.
Junior League hosts New York trip
The Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a round trip from Youngstown to New York City April 13-15. Spend the day as you wish for your selection of Broadway plays, shopping, sightseeing and dining. The “NYE Ball Drop” price is $139 per person if paid in full by Dec. 31 and $149 per person without a discount. Payment plans are accepted and must be paid in full by March 14 and will be $149 per person. Tickets are available until March 14 for the trip. Your ticket is transferable in the event you are unable to attend. No cash refunds will be issued. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
