City of Canfield held JEDD informational hearing

Council had a public informational meeting on a proposed Joint Economic Development District between the city and township.

The 115-acre property proposed for the Millennial Moments JEDD is at the corner of U.S. Route 224 and Palmyra Road in the township.

“These JEDDs are highly regulated,” City Attorney Mark Fortunato said at Wednesday night’s session. “There’s a provision in the revised code that delineates exactly what a JEDD can and can’t have in terms of the responsible party.”

If passed, it would be the second JEDD between the municipalities. The first was the Windsor House at Canfield, 6445 state Route 446, created in 2015. Like the first, this new JEDD would grant real-estate tax collection on the property to the township, and income-tax collection to the city as mandated by state law.

The property would tie into the city’s water and sewer lines, and zoning control would be handled by the township. No action was taken on passage of the JEDD.

There will be another informational hearing on the JEDD at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the township building, 20 S. Broad St.
