Man leads police on chase, has to be dragged out of car

City Prosecutor Dana Lantz told a municipal court magistrate no one is sure why a Boardman man who led police on a chase early Sunday was running in the first place.
Lantz told Magistrate Anthony Sertick at the Monday arraignment for Dante Mason, 28, he has a valid driver’s license and all he had on him when he was finally arrested after the chase was a small bag of suspected marijuana, which would yield, at most, a minor-misdemeanor citation.
Mason is in the Mahoning County jail on $7,500 bond on charges of failure to comply, resisting arrest and possession of marijuana.
Reports said police tried to pull over a car driven by Mason about 4:50 a.m. at Logan Avenue and Hubbard Road on the North Side after he failed to yield and almost hit another car.
Reports said Mason drove the wrong way on Albert Street to elude police and then almost caused several accidents when he went through the intersection at McGuffey Road and Albert Street on the East Side before he had to stop because of the car’s mechanical problems.
Mason refused to get out of the car or show his hands, and officers had to pull him out through a window, reports said. He had a bag of marijuana in his pockets, reports said.
Also arrested on a felony charge of domestic violence just after midnight Sunday was Reginald White, 47, of Anoka Lane.
Reports said police were called to White’s South Side home, where they found a half-naked woman in the driveway. The woman said she was White’s girlfriend. The pair were drinking and arguing because White accused her of still seeing a man she was dating while White was in prison.
According to reports, White punched and choked the woman before she hit him in the head to get away from him. White has a previous domestic-violence charge, which is why the latest charge at his arraignment Monday is a felony.
White was just released from prison last year. Sertick set his bond at $15,000. He is in jail.
On Saturday, reports said a man arrested on a felony charge of possession of heroin picked up another felony charge after a bag of powder was found in his pockets while he was being booked into jail.
Officers pulled over a car about 2:15 p.m. at Glenwood Avenue and Cleveland Street on the South Side driven by James Washington, 31, of Halleck Avenue, for failure to stop at a stop sign.
A records check found Washington has several warrants and open suspensions on his license. He was taken into custody, and officers found a bag of suspected heroin when they searched his car.
At the jail, another bag of powder was found in his clothes when he was changing, Washington was charged with illegal conveyance of drugs into a detention facility.
Lantz said Washington had a greenish powder on him as well as a white powder, which officers were unable to identify. They were sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to be tested. Sertick set Washington’s bond at $5,000.
