Jack Loew pulls Colon from Silver Gloves

Youngstown boxing trainer Jack Loew pulled Brayan Colon from the National Silver Gloves Boxing Tournament in Independence, Mo.

Lowe said he withdrew the 14-year-old for disciplinary reasons.

YSU Baseball coaches host skills camp

The Youngstown State baseball coaching staff will hold a Presidents Day Skills Camp on Feb. 19 at the Watson and Tressel Training Site on YSU’s campus.

The three-hour camp will begin at 1 p.m. and will be open to players in grades 7-12 or in junior college. The cost is $90 for position players and $50 for pitchers. There is no extra fee for position players who want to throw a bullpen, and video of players showcasing themselves and going through drills will be emailed to them.

Canfield grad part of new pool record

NEW WILMINGTON, PA.

Westminster’s swim team set a new Westminster Natatorium on Thursday while hosting a dual meet against Grove City.

The mens 200 freestyle relay team of Canfield graduate Daniel Bogen, Mitch Stahara, Michael Spencer and Clay Murray swam a winning time of 1:26.72, besting the 1996 Bethel Park High School swim team’s mark of 1:27.33. Westminster defeated Grove City, 154-146. On the women’s side, Westminster lost, 163-137.

Wrestling Club to host two tournaments

CANFIELD

Canfield High School and the Canfield Wrestling Club will be hosting two tournaments on Sunday. Canfield will be joined by other wrestling clubs, including Salem, Columbiana, Beaver Local and Alliance.

The youth recreation league will begin wrestling at 10 a.m. Foursome matches will face off to establish a place on the final podium.

Following the the recreation league tournament, seasoned youth wrestlers will compete in the Sectionals Tournament, starting at noon. The winners of Sectionals go on to the OEYWA League Championship, slated for Feb. 11. The kids competing are between five and 12 years old.

Coach Jerry Kill named S. Illinois ambassador

CARBONDALE, ILL.

Former Southern Illinois football coach Jerry Kill is returning as an ambassador for the Carbondale university.

School officials made the announcement Tuesday, saying Kill’s appointment as special assistant to the chancellor will start in mid-March. Kill retired from coaching last year because of seizures caused his epilepsy. He spent the season as offensive coordinator at Rutgers.

Penguins’ Sheary out with lower-body injury

CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa.

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Conor Sheary is out indefinitely with a lower-body injury.

Coach Mike Sullivan says Thursday that Sheary is “week to week” after getting hurt in a 5-2 win over San Jose on Tuesday.

Sheary has 12 goals and 19 assists in 52 games. Bryan Rust, who scored twice against San Jose, took Sheary’s spot on the top line with Sidney Crosby and Dominik Simon during practice Thursday.

Russian Olympic ban overturned by CAS

The Court of Arbitration for Sport decided Thursday to overturn the Olympic bans of 28 Russian athletes who were accused of doping at the Sochi Games four years ago.

The International Olympic Committee said the CAS decision does not automatically mean any of the Russians on the list will be invited to South Korea.
