Neighbors | Submitted .The Boardman Sswim and dive team competed in the Northeast Aquatic Conference championshot at Wooster High School. The boys took first overall and the girls team placed second overall.
The Spartans placed first in 19 out of 24 events, broke one school record and three conference records while winning the team competitions at the 2018 Northeast Aquatic Conference Championships at Wooster High School.
Mikel Flatley and Kyle Kimerer were voted “Outstanding Swimmers of the Meet” by the head coaches of all of the teams. This is the third year in a row the Spartan boys’ team has captured the N.E.A.C. team title. The girls’ team won for the second year in a row.
Co-captain Kyle Kimerer set the tone for the Spartans by breaking the school and conference record in the 200 freestyle. He smashed his previous school record by 3.4 seconds and the conference record by one second. The conference record time of 1:43.02 was set in 2007 by Glenoak swimmer Travis Wagner. Kimerer also placed first in the 100 butterfly in a near conference record time of 51.13. The conference record of 50.57 is still held by former Spartan state butterfly champion Ryan Bailey. Kimerer teamed with Callen Aulizia, Matthew DunLany and Noah Basista in both of the conference record breaking 200 and 400 freestyle relays. The 200 record time was 1:25.98 breaking the previous record of 1:28.96.
“Winning the N.E.A.C. Championships is a great team accomplishment,” Coach Terry O’Halloran said of the Spartan victories. “In the 40-year history of the championship meet, no teams have ever placed first in 19 out of 24 events. Almost all of the Spartan swimmers posted career best times. Shattering three 10-year-old meet records was awesome, along with having Mikel Flatley and Kyle Kimerer chosen as swimmers of the meet. It will be very exciting to see how we do when the team is rested at the end of the season.”
Double conference event winners were Mikel Flatley in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, Jennah Markovitch in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, Callen Aulizia in the 50 and 100 freestyle events and Noah Basista in 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke.
Individual winners included Sarah Murrayin in the 500 freestyle, Alison Kuras in the 100 breaststroke, Matt DunLany in the 100 backstroke and Gizzy Kelso in 11 dives.
In the 200 medley relay, the girls team of Alyssa Dinapoli, Abby Yocum, Sarah Varga and Alison Kuras placed second and the boys team of Will Linker, Jordan Stackpole, Mason Rassega, David Giancola came in first. In the 200 freestyle, Sarah Murray placed second, Will Linker came in third and Kyle Kimerer placed first with the school and conference record. In the 200 individual medley, Mikel Flatley and Noah Basista placed first while Jordan Stackpole came in second. In the 50 freestyle, Jennah Markovitch and Callen Aulizia placed first, Ali Kuras placed second and Mason Rassega came in third.
In 1-meter diving 11 dives, Gizzy Kelso and Teddy Anzevino placed first and Madison Riccuiti came in second. In 100 butterfly, Mikel Flatley and Kyle Kimerer came in first while Matthew DunLany placed second.
In the 100 freestyle, Jennah Markovitch and Callen Aulizia made first place while David Giancola came in third. In the 500 freestyle, Sarah Murray placed first and Will Linker placed second. In the 200 free relay, the girls team of Mikel Flatley, Ella Hare, Alison Kuras and Jenna Markovitch placed first, as well as the boys team of Kyle Kimerer, Matthew DunLany, Noah Basista and Callen Aulizi. In the 100 backstroke, Matthew DunLany placed first. In the 100 breaststroke, Alison Kuras and Noah Basista placed first while Abby Yocum came in third. In the 400 free relay, the boys team of Kyle Kimerer, Matthew DunLany, Noah Basista and Callen Aulizia placed first.
