Neighbors | Zack Shively.The Poland Rotary had their seventh annual Chili Open Derby on Jan. 26 at the Holy Family Parish Center. The night, along with another event in March, will raise funds that the Rotary will distribute between 16 charities.

The Poland Rotary had their seventh annual Chili Open Derby at Holy Family Parish Center on Jan. 26 to raise money for 16 charities.
The Rotary’s “Night at the Races“ event featured food, drinks, a raffle and a horse race. They had a total of ten races through the night.
“Our purpose is to help others who are less fortunate,” said Mary Ann Carano, who cochaired the event with Dan Dull. The event will help out service organizations, such as the Second Harvest Food Bank, Making Kids Count and the Easter Seals.
LCA Signature Shows brought the horse racing video, in which the rotary members bet on. The video featured 10 races each with 10 different horses.
Businesses, which included Simon Roofing and Assurance Land Title, sponsored the races.
The Rotary placed a number of betting windows on one side of the room.
Each race had a minimum wager of $2.
Along with the races, the rotary had a raffle. A purchase of $20 netted 25 tickets to place in a raffle for each prize, which included $250, golf clubs and a 50 inch television.
They also had special raffles. Members could pay $50 for a grand prize of a winning of $5,000.
They also had a door prize of an Apple Watch for everyone at the event.
Attendees could also spend $5 on an individual 50/50 raffle ticket or purchase three tickets for $10.
They honored their Rotarian of the Year, Steve Zentko, who helped the rotary in everything they did and exemplified their idea of “service before self.“
The funds for this event and a second Chili Open will be distributed to the charities in May.
The second event is the Rotary’s 33rd annual Chili Open Golf Classic which will take place at the Bedford Trails Golf Course in Coitsville on March 3.
