Knitting guild to meet on Feb. 13

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A program for knitting an illusion heart dishcloth will be presented. Those wishing to participate are asked to bring two colors of cotton yarn and corresponding needles.

Historian to recall Valley’s steel legacy

Steel museum founder and historian, Rick Rowlands, will review Mahoning Valley’s rich steel industry legacy on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. at Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Avenue in Boardman, for the Boardman Historical Society. The program is part of a new series of BHS public offerings. The presentations are open to the public and admission is free. Reservations are suggested. Akron Children’s Hospital names NICU regional director

Barbara Clouser, M.D., has joined Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley as regional director for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). In her role, she will oversee Akron Children’s NICU at St. Elizabeth Hospital Boardman, the Special Care Nursery at the hospital’s Beeghly campus and the Special Care Nursery at St. Joseph Hospital Warren. Dr. Clouser most recently served as director of the West Penn NICU at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, Pa. Prior to that position, she was the director of Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley’s Special Care Nursery at Beeghly and the NICU at St. Elizabeth. After receiving her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Clouser completed her pediatric residency at the UCSD Medical Center in San Diego, Calif. She then completed her fellowship in neonatology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Magee-Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Join the library for a Wizard of Oz Valentine celebration

Join the Boardman library on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. for games, activities and treats inspired by Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. Create a Valentine, and, of course, take a trip down the Yellow Brick Road. Snacks will be served at this event for children of all ages.

Lego time at the library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.

Join playtime at your library

Prepare for kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. This program is for children who are ages 2-6 and all children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult to this one-hour program.

Join tales and talks for 2s and 3s

Join the Boardman library every Wednesday at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Friendly Squares to host February Square Dance

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance Feb. 10 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances. “Valentines” will be the theme for the dance. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Teen Advisory Board meeting for February announced

Check out at the monthly Teen Advisory Board meeting on Feb. 7 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Boardman library. The TAB meets the first Wednesday of the month at the library. Participants help plan and support teen activities at the library, meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome at this program for teens in grades 7-12.

Youngstown Shrine Club’s tasting fundraiser today

The Youngstown Shrine Club will have it’s annual Beer Taste fundraiser on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. This event is for all of the community and the $25 per person ticket includes a variety of beer for sampling, refreshments and food, as well as entertainment for dancing. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Lou Garland at 330-259-1216 or John Jones at 330-792-8892, and can also be purchased at the door on the night of the event. The Youngstown Shrine Club is located at 1735 W. South Range Road (State Route 165) in North Lima. Proceeds from many of the club’s events are used to support the operations of the Shriners Hospitals for Children - Erie which provides specialized orthopedic for children of the area.

Mill Creek American Business Women’s Association to meet

The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will have its Feb. 13 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu includes chicken crepes, ham and cheese strata, scrambled eggs, link sausage, bacon, home-fried potatoes, assorted pastries, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee and tea. The speaker for the evening will be Dorothy Kane, who will talk about domestic violence. The public is welcome.

Free alternative health seminar to be Feb. 8

The Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center in Boardman will be hosting a free seminar on alternatives for managing anxiety, stress and depression on Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. The Wellness Center is located at 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite D3, in Boardman (Southbridge West Complex). Gather at Apprentice’s Inn

Those with an interest in fantasy games are encouraged to join the beginners Dungeons and Dragons club at the Boardman library on Feb. 21 from 6:30-8 p.m. and join the adventure. Refreshments and snacks are provided at this program for teens in grades 7-12.

The Winter Olympics are in South Korea this year, But the Boardman library is are having its own Winter Olympics on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. Play games, try your best and go for the gold. This program is for children of all ages.

Spread the peace at the library

Honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a craft celebrating his vision. Children, adults and teens are invited to make two crafts at the Boardman library during regular library hours so that his vision will be on display at the library and your home.

Cardinal Mooney opens admissions with winter open house and new student referral program

Cardinal Mooney High School, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, is kicking off the 2018-19 admissions season with a new student referral program. Current Mooney families and employees are encouraged to refer students from qualifying public and charter schools to apply for admissions. Celebrate Valentines Day with Friends of Fido

The Mahoning County Dog Pound will be celebrating the “For the Love of Dogs” event with Friends of Fido for the fifth year in a row. Mail a $1 bill along with a Valentine to The Mahoning County Dog Pound, PO Box 14155 Poland, Ohio 44514, to help raise funds to care for the dogs. Boardman Park is now taking reservations for 2018-2019

Boardman Park is currently taking reservations for 2018 and 2019. Reservations can be made online at www.boardmanpark.com, or through the park office by calling 330-726-8105 or visiting the park office at 375 Boardman-Poland Road in the Georgeanna Parker Activity Center. Office hours are 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The park offers four indoor rooms and five seasonal open-air pavilions to accommodate 40-232 guests for occasions such as a graduation party, bridal or baby shower, birthday party, reunion, business meeting or a special family function. If you are planning a wedding, the Gazebo, Maag Outdoor Theatre and St. James Meeting House, Boardman’s most prominent Historical landmark, are popular for ceremonies. Facilities are available for rent year-round. The park also provides a variety of outdoor recreational facilities in close proximity to the reservable facilities, including baseball fields, playgrounds, walking/hiking trails, tennis, pickle ball and sand volleyball courts and a disc golf course.

Father-daughter dance to be at Boardman Park

Boardman Park will be having the 15th annual Father-Daughter Princess Dance at the Lariccia Family Community Center. Fathers or Father figures who have a daughter(s) between the ages of 5-12 can enjoy a memorable evening of dinner, a professional photo, crafts and dancing with their little princess. This semi-formal dance will take place six nights: Feb. 9 and 10 from 6-9 p.m., Feb. 15-17 from 6-9 p.m. and Feb. 18 from 5-8 p.m. Tickets will go on sale Jan. 9. You may purchase your tickets at the park office or by phone 330-726-8105, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., or online at www.boardmanpark.com. Tickets must be purchased in advance as tickets will not be sold at the door. The cost for Boardman residents is $40 per couple and non-residents are $50 per couple. YMCA calls for art

The Davis Family YMCA in Boardman is now accepting art for its fifth annual FIVE Squared benefit art show and sale. Art must be submitted by Jan. 15. Name, title of the piece and contact info should be on the back and pieces can be mailed to The Davis Family YMCA, located at 45 McClurg Road in Boardman. All art must be 5 inches by 5 inches on a stiff surface. Any medium will be accepted, but must be light weight enough to hang on wall via sticky tack. Heavier pieces may have a hanging wire attached to back. Donations will be accepted from all ages and skill levels. Each artist may donate up to eight pieces and children may donate up to four. Early entry is encouraged. All art and artists’ names will be featured on a commemorative photomontage, featured at the Opening Reception on Feb. 4 from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Boardman YMCA. All art with be hung anonymously and patrons may purchase art for $25. Once sold, a SOLD sign will be hung along with the artist’s name. Buyers will find out the name of the artist only after purchase. Pieces that do not sell will be available for pick up on or after March 7. A high resolution file will be sent to participating artists who provide an email address. Proceeds fund ARTreach programs for under-served children and families in the community. Play Bookopoly at the library

Teens and adults, play Bookopoly for fun and prizes. Pick up your game board and instructions at any branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County and play Bookopoly from Jan. 1 through March 31. Work your way around the game board by completing tasks, such as checking out a book, visiting our Pop-up Library or getting out into the community. Completing color sets earns you an entry slip for a prize drawing for a $10 Amazon gift card. Complete the entire board to enter into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. The contest ends March 31 and all prizes will be awarded on April 16.

Junior League hosts New York trip

The Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a round trip from Youngstown to New York City April 13-15. Spend the day as you wish for your selection of Broadway plays, shopping, sightseeing and dining. The “NYE Ball Drop” price is $139 per person if paid in full by Dec. 31 and $149 per person without a discount. Payment plans are accepted and must be paid in full by March 14 and will be $149 per person. Tickets are available until March 14 for the trip. Your ticket is transferable in the event you are unable to attend. No cash refunds will be issued. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
