YSU rallies, but falls just short vs. Oakland

Karmari Newman’s three-pointer with 22 seconds remaining lifted Oakland to a 76-74 victory over Youngstown State in Horizon League action Sunday at Beeghly Center.
After a YSU timeout, Devin Morgan’s jumper with two seconds remaining was off the mark and the Penguins lost for the second time in three days at home.
YSU (4-11, 0-2) has lost seven of its last eight games.
Penguins head coach Jerrod Calhoun was looking for something else out of the timeout.
“We were trying to get a little high pick and roll with Devin,” he said.
The Penguins had rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half.
“It’s disappointing,” Calhoun said. “We missed a five-footer from the left side that would have put us up by three, then we didn’t get a stop and then we didn’t get a loose ball. This is about the fifth game that has come down to the one possession.
“When you’re talking to your kids about details and you’re talking to your guys about every possession being important, hopefully now they believe me because we could very well have four or five more wins.”
Oakland (6-9, 2-0) led for all but 4:31 of the game.
Brad Brechting’s layup at 11:58 of the second half gave the Golden Grizzlies their largest lead at 57-45, but YSU went on a 13-0 run to take a 58-57 lead.
Darius Quisenberry’s hoop with 2:11 remaining gave YSU a 74-71 lead, but Xavier Hill-Mais’ lay-up with 1:15 left pulled Oakland to within 74-73 before Newman connected on his game-winning triple.
Quisenberry led all scorers with 21 points. Morgan added 15 and Michael Akuchie 11 for YSU.
Brechting’s 19 points led five Oakland players in double figures. Hill-Mais added 16 points, Jaevin Cumberland 13, Newman 11 and Tray Maddox 10 for the Golden Grizzlies.
OLSON, CASH, DUNN POWER YSU WOMEN PAST OAKLAND

Chelsea Olson scored 11 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter and finished with a career-high 15 rebounds as the Youngstown State women’s basketball team beat Oakland 69-55 on Sunday at the Athletics Center Orena.
Sarah Cash led the Penguins (10-3, 2-0 Horizon League) with 17 points and Mary Dunn added 12.
YSU finished the game on a 30-13 run. Olson’s 3-pointer early in the quarter started a 13-0 spurt. Oakland fell to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in the HL.
Olson, a sophomore, is the first YSU guard with 15 rebounds in a game since Janae Jackson in 2016.
YSU hosts UIC at 7 p.m. Thursday at Beeghly.
