Montgomery named OC at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, VA.

Former Youngstown State offensive coordinator Shane Montgomery is taking the same title with James Madison, the school announced on Saturday.

Last year, he was the offensive coordinator at Charlotte after leaving YSU after the 2017 season. He was with the Penguins for eight seasons, coaching against James Madison in the 2016 FCS National Championship game.

Pats’ Edelman, Browns’ Mayfield fined by NFL

NEW YORK

New England receiver Julian Edelman has been fined $63,504 for three separate instances of unnecessary roughness in a victory over Buffalo, only one of which was penalized.

Cleveland quarterback Baker Mayfield was fined $10,026, but not for starting down former coach Hue Jackson in the closing minutes of the Browns’ win over Cincinnati. Mayfield’s fine was for a lewd gesture during a touchdown celebration on the sideline.

Edelman was fined twice for $26,739 apiece and once for $10,026. The only penalty came when he blocked Buffalo’s Siran Neal after calling for a fair catch on a punt.

New York Jets coach Todd Bowles was fined $25,000 for criticizing officials in levies announced Saturday. Bowles said he “thought we were playing two teams” after the Jets were flagged 16 times for a team-record 172 yards in a 44-38 overtime loss to Green Bay.

Jets defensive lineman Leonard Williams was fined $43,449, about half for an altercation with Green Bay right tackle Bryan Bulaga and the other half for a hit on quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Williams was ejected after throwing a punch at Bulaga late in the second quarter.

Napoli fans support suspended player

NAPLES, Italy

Napoli fans and players are showing their support for defender Kalidou Koulibaly after he was subjected to racist chants this week.

With Koulibaly suspended, Napoli fullback Faouzi Ghoulam warmed up for Saturday’s match against visiting Bologna wearing the Senegal international’s No. 26 shirt.

Fans held up photos of Koulibaly and anti-racism banners with the hashtag label (hash)SiamotuttiKalidou, which translates as “We are all Kalidou.”

Koulibaly had monkey noises directed at him throughout a match against Inter Milan on Wednesday at the San Siro Stadium. He was sent off in the 81st minute after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession, the second for sarcastically applauding the referee after being shown the first.

Also, Koulibaly was suspended for two matches — one for the red card and one for applauding the referee.

Britain beats Greece, wins Hopman Cup

PERTH, Australia

Cameron Norrie and Katie Boulter beat Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari 4-3, 3-4, 4-3, including 5-4 in a tiebreaker in the deciding mixed doubles set in the Fast4 format, to give Britain a 2-1 win over Greece in the opening match of the eight-team Hopman Cup tennis tournament on Saturday.

Norrie upset No. 15-ranked Tsitsipas 7-6 (6), 6-4 to give Britain the lead before Sakkari beat Boulter 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 in women’s singles to level the tie.

Australia, represented by Matt Ebden and Ash Barty, played France (Lucas Pouille and Alize Cornet) later Saturday.

Mayweather promises ‘entertainment’

TOKYO

Floyd Mayweather is promising entertainment when he fights Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in three rounds of exhibition boxing on New Year’s Eve, but not necessarily a knockout.

The American was adamant that his opponent wasn’t going to knock him out or down Monday.

“Throughout my years at boxing, I never touched the canvas once,” Mayweather, 41, told reporters at a Tokyo hotel, brushing off the upcoming event as “just another day.”

“I can do three rounds in my sleep,” he added.
