Canfield Village Middle School’s seventh- and eighth-grade choirs, under the direction of Tom Scurich, performed their annual winter choir concert on Dec. 4.
The students performed to an auditorium packed with family and friends at Canfield High School
Scurich welcomed the audience to the concert.
“Good evening and welcome to our seventh- and eighth-grade choral concert. We are delighted to have you here. We have over 200 students here tonight who will present you with a variety of music spanning five centuries and representing five languages,” Scurich said.
The seventh-grade choir opened the show with “Autumn Vesper,” by Emily Bronte and Audrey Snyder.
The choir continued with “Hanerot Halalu,” by Baruch Cohon, arranged by Chass and then performed “The Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth” arranged by Jay Althouse. The choir ended their portion of the concert with “Jingle Bells (Sort of)” by James Pierpont, arranged by Althouse.
Scurich then introduced a piano solo of “The Canyon’s Raging River” performed by Timmy Domer. Also performing a piano solo was Simon Kovass who played “March of the Dwarves” by Edvard Grieg.
The Canfield Cambiata, comprised of seventh- and eighth-grade students, then took the stage to perform “Caroling, Caroling” by Alfred S. Burt, arranged by Gilpin, a 16th century Basque Carol “Riu, Riu, Chiu” arranged by Audrey Snyder and “Little Jack Frost” by Al Stillman and Seger Ellis, arranged by Narverud.
Anthony Mazzella then performed a piano solo of “Happy Christmas” by John Lennon.
The Canfield High School Chamber Ensemble then performed “Christmas Time Is Here,” arranged by Michele Weir and “The Twelve Days After Christmas” by Frederick Silver.
The audience then engaged in two sing-a-longs, including “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Frosty the Snowman.”
Scurich then introduced the eighth-grade choir.
“I am very excited for this group. Their opportunities are endless. They are a very talented ensemble, academically, athletically and musically. They are not even close to their potential and I hope they continue to learn and grow in character and become consistent in whatever they choose to do,” Scurich said.
The eighth-grade choir began with “Psallite” by Michael Praetorius and continued with “How Like a Winter” by William Shakespeare and Ruth Morris Gray.
The choir then performed “Mistletoe and Holly” by Frank Sinatra, Dok Stanford and Henry Sanicola, arranged by Hayes. The choir closed their portion of the concert with “Medley Christmas,” arranged by Ron Howard.
Paraprofessionals and accompanists for the concert were Courtney Larson and Tim Elder. Student accompanists included seventh-graders Timmy Domer, Emma Gostey, Simon Kovass, Anthony Mazzella, Mallory Stilson and Aven Thomas. Eighth-grade accompanists included Dylan Aubel and Madeline Ross.
