Scouts to participate in Klondike Derby
The Whispering Pines Distract Klondike Derby will take place the weekend of Jan. 4-6, 2019 at Great Trail Council’s Camp Stambaugh where Boy Scouts from throughout Mahoning County and Hubbard, Ohio will converge at the camp to re-create a Klondike Gold Rush back to 1919, when Camp Stambaugh was established. A Scout Klondike Derby is based on the real-life struggles encountered by the men and dogs crossing the frozen Klondike in search of wealth in the gold fields. Scouts will have the opportunity to conquer some of the same challenges that these adventures faced, in hopes of finding their own treasure. Each patrol (a team composed of 5-8 Scouts) will have a sled that will be loaded with material and equipment needed to overcome the challenges at the stations. Successful completion of a station task will award a patrol gold. The Scouts will experience nine stations to test their abilities and earn gold, including “Ice Accident” (First Aid), Stambaugh History, “Knot So Hard Scout Skills” (knot tying), “Keeping Warm and Full” (fire building and cooking), “Finding the Gold” (orienteering), “Wilderness Survival in the Klondike,” “Blind in a Storm” (teamwork), “Competing for Gold” (teamwork) and “Nature Identification” (teamwork). Mah-Jongg Mondays
Practice your new skill to rattle the tiles and join the fun on Jan. 2, 7, 14, 22 and 28 from 1-3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend. Mah-Jongg sets not provided. This event is for adults.
Science caf at Canfield - human cadavers
How society treats and uses the dead after they pass away is something that can’t be ignored or minimized. This program at the Canfield library on Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. will use the book “Stiff” by Mary Roach and other sources to learn about human cadaver uses. This event is for adults.
Canfield Friends to meet
The Friends of PLYMC - Canfield Committee will have a meeting on Jan. 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the Canfield library.
Mill Creek ABWA to have meeting on Jan. 8
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Jan. 8 meeting at A LA Cart Catering in Canfield, beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The speaker for the evening will be Mary Grace Fowler of Holborn Herb Growers Guild. The Holborn Herb Growers maintain the gardens at the village in Canfield Fair grounds as well as the gardens at Boardman Park. They have an annual tea in September as a fundraiser to help with the expense of buying flowers for these gardens. The menu for the evening will be chicken crepes, ham and cheese strata, french toast sticks, bacon, Canadian bacon, home-fried potatoes, assorted pastries, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee and tea. The cost is $17 per person and reservations may be made by calling Darlene Demjen at 330-755-9089 or Marilyn Abramski at 330-726-2527 by Dec. 31. The public is welcome.
FAFSA workshop
Applying for federal student aid can be very intimidating, but the MCCTC Adult Career Center, located at 7300 N. Palmyra Road in Canfield, is ready to help. Join them for a hands-on FAFSA workshop on Jan. 7 from 6-7:30 p.m. and learn about the types of Federal Title IV funding available, common misunderstandings and mistakes completing the application, and gain hands-on assistance with completing your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You will need to bring the following items with you: a photo I.D., your Social Security number, your Alien Registration number (if you are not a U.S citizen), your 2016 and 2017 Federal Income Tax Returns, your 2016 and 2017 W-2’s and other records of money earned, records of investments (if applicable), records of untaxed income (if applicable) and a current bank statement.
Chair Yoga
The Canfield library will have a chair yoga class every Friday throughout January at 10 a.m. Pay as you attend. Class is $10 per session. Dress comfortably. This event is for adults
Holiday closings
All Mahoning County libraries will be closed on Dec. 31 and Jan.1 for the New Year holiday, and on Jan. 21, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
CHS swim and dive team hosts annual pancake breakfast
The Canfield High School swim and dive team will host its annual pancake breakfast fundraiser on Jan. 6 in the Canfield High School cafeteria from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or from any CHS swimmer, diver or booster parents. The cost is $6.50 for adults and $4 for children. Take-out breakfasts are also available for purchase. The breakfast includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, milk and orange juice. The proceeds will benefit the swim and dive team program. Money raised supports coach salaries, pool rental fees, meet entry fees, equipment, team suits, the team banquet and awards, after-meet meals and special busing to the NEAC conference championship meet. The Canfield High School swim and dive team boosters organize the event and take over the high school kitchen to prepare the breakfast. Members of the swim and dive team take shifts bussing tables, selling raffle tickets and making sure that everyone has enough to eat.
Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Canfield library on Jan.8, 15, 22 and 29 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Bonding with babies and books
This event, which will take place every Thursday in January at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Elmer the elephant’s 30th birthday
Celebrate Elmer the elephant’s 30th birthday at the Canfield library on Jan. 12 at 2:30 p.m. Wear your brightest clothing and celebrate. There will be party games, songs, a craft and, of course, a special treat of birthday cake and ice cream. This event is for children who are ages 3 and up.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in January at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Lego my library
Meet at the Canfield library on Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. and Jan. 19 at 2:30 p.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
Tales to tails
Read to your favorite therapy dogs on Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. This helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or they’ll find one for you. This event is for children in grades K and up. Therapy dogs provided by Pet Partners of Greater Youngstown, a local Pet Therapy group.
Slime time for tweens
Join the Canfield library in the laboratory on Jan. 26 at 2:30 p.m. as they create several slime species. Try your hand at making and playing with unicorn, fluffy, galaxy, clear and glow-in-the-dark varieties of slime. All necessary supplies will be provided, including containers to bring home a sample or two. Light snacks and a drink will be enjoyed after clean up. This event is for tweens who are ages 9-12.
Chocolate cake day
Bring your favorite chocolate cake recipe to the Canfield library on Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. to share. Come learn about the history and health benefits of chocolate, try your luck at a chocolate trivia quiz, play a competitive game and taste a chocolate dessert. A tasty treat will be served. This event is for adults and teens.
Learn to line dance
Learn to line dance at the Canfield library at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 10 and 24. Line dancing is a fun, exciting activity to dance your way to good health. Line dances are very easy to learn, mainly because the steps are straightforward, and you do not have to coordinate your movements with a partner. Line dances also involve repeating series of steps, so if you get lost, you can easily catch up with the rest of the class. This class will combine low, moderate and high energy line dance routines and will help you burn calories at the same time. This event is for adult and teens.
Coloring for grown-ups
Join the Canfield library on Jan. 14 at 10 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for adults and teens only.
Sit and stitch
Sit and stitch with others at the Canfield library on Jan. 10 and 24 at 11 a.m. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your UFOs (unfinished objects): quilting, appliqu , knitting or crochet projects, and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity. This event is for adults.
Family movie
Join the Canfield library on Jan. 5 at 2:30 p.m. for a Saturday movie matinee. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Children age 7 years and younger must be with an adult. This event is for the family.
Movie night
Join the Canfield library on Jan. 3 at 6 p.m. for a movie night where they will be watching a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. This event is for adults and teens. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Movie will be either PG or PG-13.
The power of Ancestry.com
This program, which will take place on Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library, is a demonstration of the Ancestry database. As an online tool, it is essential for beginning and advancing research. Learn how to use this resource. Registration is required by phoning 330-744-8636 or online via the library’s events calendar. Microsoft Word - class 1
Learn the basic skills of Microsoft Word at the Canfield library on Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. This beginner’s class that will cover the Word menus, and functions like cut/copy/paste, font, save and print. Some basic computer skills are required. Class will soon be followed by Microsoft Word - class 2 and class 3. Register online via the library events calendar or call 330-744-8636. Off the shelves
This monthly book club will have a lively discussion of titles chosen “off the shelves” of the Canfield library’s book club room. Upcoming dates are Jan. 29 at 6:30 a.m. and Jan. 31 at 11 a.m. at the Canfield library. They will discuss “Clock Dance” by Anne Tyler. This event is for adults.
Blood pressure screening
There will be a blood pressure screening by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association on Jan. 16 from 1-2 p.m. at the Canfield library.
Friendly Squares January square dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Jan. 12 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. Neil Harner will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Gamblers Anonymous meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 4:30 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa.
