Girls JV squad has victory over Massillon
The Boardman Lady Spartans junior varsity squad improved to 2-2 on the season with a nice victory over the Massillon Tigers by the score of 47-31 in their home opener on Dec. 15. All 14 players on the roster made an impact on the game and the maroon and white put 10 girls in the scoring column. Leading the way were three freshman - Emma Mills with 13, Jenna Olexa with nine and Josie Porter with seven. Ryleigh Neill scored four points, Madi Larch had three and five other Spartans each had two - Emily Olexa, Dana Haus, Priya Shah, Bella Larch and Emily Rutledge. Kennedy Furano, Tini Zheng and Paige Jankwoski all played key roles in today’s team win.
BHS girls basketball defeats Massillon Washington
The Boardman girls’ basketball team defeated the Massillon Washington Tigers in their home opener by a final score of 58-34 on Dec. 15. The Spartans used a full court press to create 23 turnovers from Massillon. Boardman led by nine at the half before blowing it open in the third quarter by outscoring the Tigers 19-4. Leading the way in scoring for the Spartans was sophomore Maria Torres who scored a game high 24 points, which included four 3-pointers. Raegan Burkey also had double digits in points by hitting for 15 points. Burkey also knocked down a three pointer. Sophomore Katie Stamp hit for double digits as well with 12 points. Bailey Moore played a great defensive game and added four points. Emma Tokarsky hit both of her free throws for two points and Cate Green rounded out the scoring with one point.
Seventh-grade boys defeat Warren White
The Boardman boys seventh-grade basketball white team beat Warren White on Dec. 13, 41-10. Jack Ericson led the offensive effort with 17 points while Landon Mitchell added nine and Jaden Payne scored eight. DeMayne Earvin finished with three points, and John Burton and Ryan Conti each scored two.
Freshman girls have loss
The BHS girls freshman basketball team suffered a loss to Canfield on Dec. 13 with a score of 31-27.
Maroon eighth-grade boys defeated by Lakeside
The Boardman boys eighth-grade basketball maroon team fell to Lakeside with a score of 48-45 on Dec. 13.
Boys varsity basketball wins against Mooney
The Boardman boys varsity basketball team won big against Cardinal Mooney with a score of 66-48 before a crowd in the Boardman gymnasium. The game was close after one quarter with the Spartans leading 19-18. However, Boardman’s depth and relentless defensive pressure was able to wear down Mooney in the second quarter, forcing numerous turnovers (22 total for the game) and allowing the Spartans to take a 46-28 halftime lead. The game stayed even in the second half but the damage was already done. Boardman had 10 different players contribute to the scoring column led by Daeone Martin with 18 points and three steals, followed by Tommy Fryda with 13 points, Derrick Anderson with nine, Che Trevena with eight points, three steals and three assists, Connor Miller and Shay Eicher each with six points and three rebounds a piece, Zach Ryan and Nick Torres with two points each and Ethan Andersen and Charlie Davis both added a free throw.
Girls swimmers fall to Jackson
The Boardman girls varsity swim team fell to Jackson with a score of 110-76 on Dec. 13.
Freshman boys basketball victorious over Canfield
The freshman boys basketball team at Boardman defeated Canfield on Dec. 13. The final score was 52-47. The Spartans jumped out to an early lead, sparked by Cam Thompson, who finished with 18 points. A good defensive effort in the first half allowed Boardman to establish a lead they would maintain for the entirety of the game. Despite Canfield’s best effort, the Spartans were able to answer a late fourth quarter surge to seal the victory. Leading scorers for Boardman were Thompson with 18 points and Anthony Hightower with 12 points. DJ Evans had three important buckets in the fourth quarter and finished the game with eight points. Also scoring for the Spartans were Reshaud Biggs with seven points, Luke Ryan with four and Ben Alvarico with three points.
Eighth-grade boys team defeats Warren team
Boardman’s boys eighth-grade basketball white team beat Warren White on Dec. 13 with a score of 52-33. The Spartans started quickly by scoring 21 points in the first quarter on buckets by seven different players. Boardman never looked back from there as they carried a 26 point lead into the fourth quarter. Ahmir Colpetro led all scorers with 12 points, including two 3-point baskets. Cam Stanley added eight, Prab Singh scored seven and Tequan Bailey put six points on the board.
Seventh-grade maroon girls beat Lakeside
The girls seventh grade basketball maroon team beat Lakeside 24-8 on Dec. 13. Leading scorers for the Lady Spartans were Ava Bosnjak - 10, Leah Evans - 6, Cici Johnson - 4, Gabby Goddard - 2 and Dana Qutail - 2. Good defense from Camryn Lyda and Brooke Yoder aided in the victory.
Girls freshman defeated by Canfield
The Boardman High School girls freshman basketball team was defeated by Canfield on Dec. 6 with a score of 42-13. Jenna Madick led the Spartans with six points. Rounding out the scoring for the Spartans, Malysea Flood, Josie Porter and Jenna Olexa had two points and Hermosa Ortiz scored one point.
Boys maroon falls to Howland
The boys eighth-grade maroon basketball team fell to Howland with a score of 32-28 on Dec. 10. Boardman was led by Brady DePietro with eight points and Declan Shannon with five points.
Boys varsity basketball wins against Lakeview
Boardman boys varsity basketball earned a hard-fought team win, defeating a very tough Lakeview team on the road 58-53 on Dec. 11. After a slow start, the Spartans used good pressure defense and depth to take a lead midway through the first quarter, one which they would not give up the rest of the night. After opening up a couple double digits advantages, Boardman saw their lead cut to only two with 20 seconds left to play. Derrick Anderson and Che Trevena both hit big free throws to seal the win. The Spartans depth was showcased on both ends of the floor with good defensive pressure and balanced scoring, led by Derrick Anderson with 17 points and four assists. Che Trevena was also in double figures with 10 points. Shay Eicher, Cam Kreps, Charlie Davis and Daeone Martin all added six points. Tommy Fryda added five points and Ethan Andersen rounded out the scoring with two points.
Seventh-grade boys basketball defeat Canfield
The seventh-grade boys basketball white team came from behind in overtime to beat Canfield on Dec. 10 with a score of 29-28. Jaden Payne scored all five of Boardman’s points in overtime and finished with 11 points on the night. Jack Ericson had a strong game with 10 points and Landon Mitchell, Jack Burton, and DeMayne Earvin each finished with two points each.

The Boardman girls junior varsity basketball team fell to Lakeside with a score of 33-24 on Dec. 10. Scorers for Boardman were Madi Larch - 8, Christine Zheng - 7, Kennedy Furano - 4, Priya Shah - 4 and Emily Rutledge - 1.
Eighth-grade boys win against Canfield
The boys eighth-grade white basketball team grabbed their first win of the year on Dec. 10 at Canfield with a score of 41-34. Down by 10 early in the game, Ahmir Colpetro banked home a 3-point, buzzer beater to cut the deficit to only one at the end of the first half. He nailed another buzzer-beater at the end of the third period. Now ahead by 10, the Spartans were able to cruise to victory. Carson Essad led all scorers with 11 points and four steals. Cam Stanley added 10 points. Colpetro knocked down a third 3-point basket to finish with nine points.
Boys varsity swimmers defeat Jackson
The boys varsity swim team defeated Jackson with a score of 103-77 on Dec. 13.
BHS girls basketball defeats Lakeside
The BHS girls varsity basketball team defeated Lakeside with a score of 80-33 on Dec. 10. The victory moved the Spartans to 2-1 on the young season and 1-0 in AAC play. The girls got off to a fast start by jumping out to a 23-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The girls would increase that advantage to 26 points at the half by outscoring Lakeside 19-8 in the second quarter. A quick start to the third quarter foiled any chances of a Lakeside comeback. The Lady Spartans were led by Raegan Burkey who scored a career high 32 points. She also had nine steals and seven assists. Cate Green hit for 12 points while dropping off eight assists and having six steals. Katie Stamp also scored in double digits with 11 to go along with her 14 rebounds. This was her second double-double of the young season. Maria Torres added nine points while having four assists. Bailey Moore came off the bench to hit for eight points. She also had six steals. Christine Zheng posted five points, while Emma Tokarsky and Jersey Gorby each chipped in with two. Rounding out the scoring was Priya Shah who added a free throw.

The Boardman eighth-grade girls white basketball team had a loss to Canfield on Dec. 10 with a score of 37-32.
Boys freshman basketball defeats Howland
The Boardman boys freshman basketball team went on the road on Dec. 10 for the first time this season and pulled out a gutsy win against Howland, 27-22. Points were hard to come by as both defenses controlled the tempo of the game. The Boardman defense kept Howland to zero baskets in the first half, with Howland’s only points coming from the charity stripe. The Spartans were able to create enough easy looks in the second half on offense to pull away late in the fourth quarter. Leading the way for Boardman was Luke Ryan with eight points, Carter Mraz with five and Cortland Love with four points. DJ Evans, Cam Thompson, Terence Thomas, Reshaud Biggs and Ben Alvarico each contributed with two points. The win improves the freshman record to 4-0.

The Boardman girls seventh-grade maroon basketball team fell to Howland with a score of 39-22 on Dec. 10. Leading scorers for the Lady Spartans were Gabby Goddard - 13, Ava Bosnjak - 7 and Cici Johnson - 2.
