Anderson, Indians agree on $641,250 deal, avoid salary arbitration

CLEVELAND

Indians right-hander Cody Anderson has avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract for $641,250.

Anderson, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2016 and is trying to make a comeback from elbow surgery, made the $545,000 minimum this year.

The Indians are hoping the 28-year-old can rebound to give them starting depth or fill a bullpen spot.

Anderson went 7-3 in 15 starts for Cleveland in 2015. He struggled the following season and had Tommy John surgery on March 27, 2017.

He spent most of last season in Goodyear, Ariz., doing rehab work before appearing in three games at three minor league levels.

Anderson’s contract includes award bonuses.

He is 9-8 with a 4.50 ERA in 34 games — 24 starts — in the majors.
