Court-sponsored art contest winners announced

The Mahoning County Juvenile Court Community Advisory Board recently presented awards at a special banquet at The Embassy for its 15th annual poster contest.

Sponsors of the contest are The DeBartolo Corp., DiRusso’s Sausage and Farmers National Bank.

Winners from area schools received awards for the posters they designed for the prompt “My future looks bright because ...”.

Dr. Samuel AduPoku and Robyn Maas served as judgest for the contest, and entries were receive from students in grades 5 through 8.

Judge Theresa Dellick welcomed those attending, and Molly Johnson, Esq., was guest speaker. The Rev. Lewis Macklin of Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church gave the invocation and closing prayer.

Students were awarded from $25 to $200 for their entries. Winners were as follows:

First place: Cadence Shorthouse, 6th grade, Struthers Middle School, and Heaven Lewis, 8th grade, St. Christine School.

Second place: Leanna Boccieri, 5th grade, and Chase Forsyth, 7th grade, both of Holy Family School.

Third place: Brandi Williams, 5th grade, St. Nicholas School, and Averi Shumaker, 8th grade, Lowellville.

Honorable mentions: Roxanna Flores-Kaufman, 5th grade, St. Nicholas; Aiden DeBeaulieu, 8th grade, Lowellville; and Sean Cummings, 5th grade, Boardman Center.

The contest’s purpose is to promote academics and incorporate art as a meaningful media in which to express the students’ interests in pursuing an education.

More than 300 students participated in this year’s event.
