Arms Museum offers Christmas display

YOUNGSTOWN

Memories of Christmas Past at the Arms Family Museum featured a unique public component this year, the second annual Youngstown Gingerbread House Competition.

More than 50 houses were part of the competition presented in partnership with the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, Next Best Art and SMARTS. Several community organizations got involved, including OH WOW!, The Melnick Medical Museum, the Steel Museum, Junior Achievement of the Mahoning Valley and Ballet Western Reserve.

In the adult category, first place went to Corri Hileman, Jessi Yates and Theresa Olesky for their Twelve Days of Christmas House complete with a leaping Lord and a “penguin” in a pear tree. Second place went to Carol Sudzina for her church creation and third place was awarded to Emily Coelho for her log cabin. In the youth category, first place went to Emilie Kolenich, second place went to Sophie Roelandts and third place went to Gabe Bettross. Roelandts and Bettross, along with more than 25 other youth participants, worked with SMARTS to create their gingerbread houses as part of a hands-on workshop.

All of the gingerbread house submissions are on display at Memories of Christmas Past at the Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave. The exhibit is open from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and from noon to 7 p.m. Thursdays.
