Cardinal Mooney to take over Barnes & Noble for Akron Children’s Hospital

On Dec. 15 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., Cardinal Mooney High School will ‘take over’ Barnes & Noble, located at the Shops at Boardman Park - 381 Boardman-Poland Road in Boardman, for the benefit of Akron Children’s Hospital of the Mahoning Valley. CMHS students will host events throughout the weekend, including gifts wrapped by CMHS students and ACHMV volunteers for a small fee, which will be donated to the hospital’s program, the CMHS choir will entertain shoppers with Christmas carols at noon and at various times, CMHS students will read stories and conduct a crafting project with elementary school students.

Valley STEM + ME2 accepting applications for 2019-2020 school year

Enrollment is open for incoming ninth- and tenth-grade students interested in applying to the Valley STEM + ME2 Academy for the 2019-2020 school year. The 7,500 square foot lab is housed on the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center Campus in Canfield. Valley STEM accepts 100 ninth-grade students and 100 tenth-grade students from all over the county. Canfield students create colorful holiday

The National Honor Society and art club at Canfield High School are hoping to make the holiday season a little more colorful for local children. Candice Kraykovich organized a coloring book drive to befit the Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown. Books can be donated to CHS until Dec. 18.

Local church hosts Lessons and Carols event

Lord of Life Lutheran Church, located at 550 N. Broad St, in Canfield, will present the annual service of Lessons and Carols. This service consists of numerous Bible readings by parish lectors, introducing an equal number of Advent carols, which are sung by the sanctuary choir with the congregation joining in. It will take place on Dec. 23 at 10:15 a.m. There will be refreshments to follow in the church fellowship hall. Any questions can be directed to the church office at 330-533-3531. All are welcome.

Blood pressure screening

There will be a blood pressure screening by the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association on Dec. 19 from 1-2 p.m. at the Canfield library.

Canfield students create colorful holiday

Breakfast with Santa at Camp Stambaugh

Children of all ages are invited to have Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 15 from 8-11 a.m. in the Camp Stambaugh Dining Hall, located at 3712 Leffingwell Road in Canfield. Everyone will enjoy a pancake breakfast with Santa and there will be free gifts for the children. Bring your camera and take your own pictures with Santa. The cost is free for children ages 4 and under, $5 for children ages 5-12 years-old and $8 for those older than those ages, including adults. Register online at https://scoutingevent.com/433-santa. Off the shelves

Attend this monthly book club for a lively discussion of titles chosen “off the shelves” of the Canfield library’s book club room. At the Dec. 18 at 6:30 p.m. and Dec. 27 at 11 a.m. meetings, they will discuss “Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Wingate. In January, they will discuss “Clock Dance” by Anne Tyler.

Blood drive

Coupon swap at the library

If you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have, drop in during Canfield library hours during December to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This event is for adults.

Mah-Jongg Mondays

Practice your new skill to rattle the tiles and join the fun on Dec. 17 and 26 (a Wednesday) from 1-3 p.m. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend. (Mah-Jongg sets not provided). This event is for adults.

Holiday closings

All Mahoning County libraries will be closed for holidays as follows: Dec. 23, 24, 25, 30 and 31, as well as on Jan. 1.

International Peace Light comes to Mahoning Valley

The International Peace Light will arrive in Youngstown on the evening of Dec. 3 and within the following week it will be distributed. In Mahoning County, it will be available at JMJ Spiritual Connection store, located at 3408 Canfield Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg), beginning on Dec. 4 until Christmas Eve during normal business hours and Camp Stambaugh Scout Shop, located at 3712 Leffingwell Road in Canfield, beginning on Dec. 8 until Dec. 22 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12–7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Grinch party

Holiday fun will be a cinch at the Canfield library on Dec. 15 at 11 a.m. at the WHO-LIDAY party starring “The Grinch.” They will view the movie and more. This event is for children of all ages and is a holiday program.

Ugly sweater contest at the library

Join in the fun to vote for the library staff member wearing the ugliest holiday sweater from Dec. 10-15 at the Canfield library during regular hours. One vote per person per day, and your vote enters you into a drawing for a gift certificate prize.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at 10 a.m. every Thursday in December at the Canfield library.

Create a cat castles

Spoil your cat rotten for the holidays by making them a cat castle at the Canfield library on Dec. 17 at 6 p.m. The library will supply cardboard, paper, crayons and a few other items. Bring your own scissors, cat toys and other supplies to attach if you would like. This event is for adults and teens.

Bookstores and libraries invited to join in celebration of Short Fiction Day

The annual Celebrate Short Fiction Day takes place on Dec. 21, and founder Nancy Christie is inviting bookstores and libraries to create their own event. Christie explained that she created “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day to honor the short story in all its forms and lengths. She encourages libraries and bookstores to host their own “Celebrate Short Fiction” Day events and has provided tip sheets on her web page (http://tinyurl.com/CelebrateShortFictionDay) for those looking for ideas.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in December at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Christmas traditions from around the world

In the final genealogy program of 2018, which will take place on Dec. 19 at 6:30 p.m., they will explore Yuletide celebrations as enjoyed in selected countries. This event is for adults and teens. Holiday bead work

Make a holiday bracelet during this event at the Canfield library on Dec. 15 at 2:30 p.m. and have something to wear for this festive season. This event is for ages 9-12.

Sit and stitch

Sit and stitch with others at the Canfield library at 11 a.m. on Dec. 20. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your UFOs (Unfinished Objects): quilting, appliqu , knitting or crochet projects and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity. This event is for adults.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 4:30 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at 1451 Churchill Hubbard Road in Youngstown. This location is handicapped accessible.
