Boys varsity basketball defeats Niles
The Boardman boys varsity basketball team went on the road on Dec. 7 and earned a very hard fought team victory against Niles, 84-68. A back and forth game saw several lead changes for three quarters until the Spartans effort wore down the Red Dragons in the fourth quarter, which started with Boardman on a 15-0 run. The Spartans were able to dominate the paint, out-scoring Niles by 20 around the rim. Having four players in double figures along with only nine turnovers were keys for Boardman as well. Boardman was led by junior Derrick Anderson with 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Daeone Martin had another big scoring night with 19 points, along with six assists. Cam Kreps was a difference maker on both ends of the floor, scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Charlie Davis was the fourth Spartan in double figures with 11 points, while grabbing five rebounds. Tommy Fryda connected on three triples for nine points. Zach Ryan had five points to go along with a great defensive effort. Shay Eicher rounded out the scoring with four points and five rebounds.
Boys swimmers take first in tri-meet
The Boardman boys Spartan swimmers had a strong showing against Massilon and Canfield on Dec. 7, winning the tri-meet with a score of 139. Double event winners included Jordan Stackpole - 200 freestyle (1:52.26) and the 500 freestyle (5:14.50), and Noah Basista - 200 individual medley (2:01.45) and the 100 breaststroke (1:03.60). Single event winners included Matthew DunLany - 100 butterfly (54.95), Will Linker - 100 freestyle (50.56) and River Flatley - 100 backstroke (58.08). First place relay places include the medley team of Flatley, Basista, DunLany and Linker (1:41.50), and the 200 free relay team of Basista, DunLany, Stackpole and Linker (1:31.28).
Boys lose to Girard
The Boardman High School boys varsity basketball team fell to Girard on Dec. 8. The final score was 69-65.
Boys swimmers take second at NEAC Relays
The Boardman boys varsity swimming team finished in second place at the NEAC Relays on Dec. 8 with a score of 114 points. Boardman relay winners included the 200 butterfly relay team of Brendan Beam, Justin Yocum, Matthew DunLany and Noah Basista; the 400 individual medley relay of Noah Basista, Justin Yocum, Siman Mascola and Matthew DunLany; the 200 breaststroke relay team of Jordan Stackpole, Justin Yocum, Carter Cailor and Noah Basista, and the 400 freestyle relay team of Ben Henderson, Will Linker, Jordan Stackpole and Matthew DunLany.
Girls swimmers defeat Canfield and Massillon
The BHS girls swimmers took first in a tri-meet against Canfield and Massillon on Dec. 7 with a score of 145. The girls won all 12 events. Double event winners included Jennah Markovitch - 200 freestyle (2:08.33) and 500 freestyle (5:4528), Mikel Flatley - 50 freestyle (26.15) and 100 butterfly (1:03.95). Single event winners include Sarah Varga - 200 individual medley (2:36.21), Allison Kuras - 100 freestyle (59.34), Alyssa DiNapoli - 100 backstroke (1:05.58) and Abby Yocum - 100 breaststroke (1:16.92). The 200 medley relay team of DiNapoli, Yocum, Flatley and Kuras placed first (1:59.12), as did the 200 free relay team of Yocum, Markovitch, Varga and Flatley with a time of 1:48.58, and the 400 free relay team of Markovitch, Varga, Kuras and DiNapoli with a time of 4:04.53.
Maroon boys team wins against Warren
The Boardman maroon eighth-grade boys won a hard fought and dramatic victory over Warren gold on Dec. 6 with a 37-35 triumph in double overtime. The game was back and forth throughout, with both defenses controlling the action after intermission. Boardman missed last second shots to win the game in both regulation and the first overtime. In the second overtime, a 3-point field goal by Brady Depietro and a free throw by Deon Elliott with 10 seconds left were the difference. The Spartans were led by DePietro with 21 points, with five other players adding 2-4 points each.
Freshman boys claim win over Girard
On Dec. 6, the Spartan freshman boys basketball team improved their record to 3-0 with a 39-19 win over Girard. After a slow start in the first half, Boardman cranked up the pressure and was able to convert Girard turnovers into points. The Spartan defense kept Girard to just six points and one made basket in the second half. Leading the way for the Spartans was Luke Ryan with nine points, Terence Thomas with seven and DJ Evans with six points. Ben Alvarico and Cam Thompson chipped in with five points each. Carter Mraz added three points and Reshaud Biggs and Max Rassega each had two points.
BGJHS girls maroon victorious over Warren gold
The Boardman Glenwood girls seventh-grade maroon basketball team notched their first victory of the season with a convincing 43-15 win over Warren gold. Leading scorers for the Lady Spartans were Ava Bosnjak - 25, Gabby Goddard - 10, CiCi Johnson - 4, Leah Evans - 2 and Brooke Yoder - 2. Strong defense from Camryn Lyda and Dana Qutail assisted in the outcome. The girls are 1-2.
Glenwood eighth-grade girls defeat Hubbard
On Dec. 6, the Boardman Glenwood eighth-grade girls basketball team defeated the Hubbard Lady Eagles by a score of 40-20. Gia Triveri netted 12 points in the win and Cami Goske along with Bella Martin also made strong contributions with 10 points each. Faith Jackson chipped in with four points along with Natalie Davis’s two points in the balanced scoring attack. Reagan Smith and Allyson Fleming rounded out the scoring with one point each. Contributing valuable minutes off the bench were Aidan Woodward, Madi Rule, Jackie Milentijevic, Lauren Bero, Katie Kershaw and Angelina Lewis.
Holiday shootout to take place Dec. 26-28
The fifth annual Boardman Spartan Holiday Shootout will take place Dec. 26-28 for boys in divisions of grades four through six in the Boardman Glenwood Middle School gymnasium, located at 7635 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman. There is a four-game guarantee, and it will have a shootout format – 25 minute running clock. Awards will be given for first and second place in each division. The entry fee is $160 per team. Boardman has loss to Canton Glenoak
Boardman boys varsity basketball lost a hard-fought game to Canton Glenoak 63-50 on Dec. 4. After a back and forth first half, Glenoak was able to surge out of the locker room in the third quarter building a 15 point lead. The Spartans maintained their composure and battled back, eventually getting within four points midway through the fourth quarter. A few bad bounces and close misses allowed Glenoak to get the lead back to a three possession game. The Golden Eagles then finished the game at the free throw line, making 10 in the final period. Derrick Anderson followed his big performance in game 1 with another very strong effort in game 2. He finished with a game high 20 points, along with five assists and five steals. Daeone Martin had a good night scoring with 14 points, to go along with three steals. Tommy Fryda added six points with three steals. Zach Ryan and Charlie Davis each added three points and great energy. Shay Eicher and Cam Kreps battled inside helping to negate Glenoak’s size advantage.
Boys maroon eighth-grade basketball defeats Austintown
Boardman maroon boys eighth-grade basketball team improved to 1-1 on the season with a 47-25 defeat of Austintown Middle School blue on Dec. 3. The Spartans started quickly, forcing a barrage of first half turnovers and building a 24-7 lead by intermission. A balanced attack was led by John Chetsko and Brady Depietro with 11 points each, Austin Ward adding nine and eight for Deon Elliott. Depietro also added double digit rebounds and four blocked shots.
Boardman has loss to Austintown
On Dec. 3, the boys eighth-grade basketball white team has a loss to Austintown Middle School red with a score of 41-25. Despite getting out to an early lead, the Spartans struggled late against the Falcons. Cam Stanley led the Spartans with 13 points, including a 3-pointer at the final buzzer. Forward Tequan Bailey added four points while Guard Ahmir Colpetro scored three.
Eighth-grade boys white team sees loss to Poland
The eighth-grade boys basketball white team fell to Poland Middle School 41-25 on Nov. 29. The team got off to a slow start, struggling to find the bottom of the basket through the first two quarters. Cam Stanley led the Spartans with 10 points. Jordan Saulsberry added six, while Carson Essad and Ahmir Colpetro each scored five.
Seventh grade boys basketball victorious over Austintown
The seventh-grade boys basketball white team beat Austintown Middle School red on Dec. 3 with a score of 35-18 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Jaden Payne and Jack Ericson led the offense with 10 points each and Landon Mitchell scored eight. Noah Ziak, Jack Neill, Ryan Conti and JT Long each added two points.
Girls varsity basketball has loss to Mooney
On Dec. 3, the Boardman Spartans varsity ladies’ basketball team fell to 1-1 by dropping a road contest at Mooney 60-48. Mooney jumped out to a 12 point lead at the half before the Spartans rallied to cut it to three midway through the fourth quarter. A late 8-0 run by the Cardinals sealed the victory. Boardman was led by Sophomore Maria Torres who put in 21 points. Cate Green, Katie Stamp and Raegan Burkey all had seven points to help in the cause. Sophomore Bailey Moore came off the bench to chip in with six. Green played great defense on Mooney’s leading scorer Cam Hergenrother by holding her to one point.
Boys freshmen basketball wins against Warren
On Dec. 3, the freshman boys basketball team opened up AAC league play with a big win over Warren Harding, 60-40. After ending the first quarter tied at nine, the Spartans began to pull away from the Raiders with a balanced offensive attack and stingy defense. They outscored Warren 18-3 in the second quarter. After a sluggish start to the second half, the freshmen again stretched the lead in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory. Leading scorers for Boardman were Anthony Hightower with 12 points, Reshaud Biggs and DJ Evans with 11 points each, Cortland Love with nine and Cam Thompson with eight. Also contributing were Ben Alvarico with four points, Luke Ryan with three and Seth Cervello finishing with two points.
Seventh-grade girls maroon has loss to AMS blue
Girls seventh-grade basketball maroon team fell to Austintown Middle School blue with a score of 23-17. Leading scorers for the Lady Spartans were Ava Bosnjak - 12, CiCi Johnson - 2, Dana Qutail - 2 and Gabby Goddard - 1. The girls are 0-2.
Boys freshmen basketball opens season in victory
The Spartan freshman boys basketball team opened their season on Nov. 28 with a victory over Cardinal Mooney, winning by a score of 37-21. The Boardman defense was the story of the game, holding Mooney to just six baskets for the entire contest. Leading the balanced scoring for Boardman was Luke Ryan with seven points. Terence Thomas added six points and Anthony Hightower chipped in with five points. Reshaud Biggs, Cortland Love and Ben Alvarico all contributed with four points.
Eighth-grade girls basketball defeats AMS red
On Dec. 3, the Boardman Glenwood Junior High School eighth-grade girls basketball team defeated the Austintown Middle School red with a score of 44-26. The win improves the Lady Spartans to 2-1 on the season. Leading the way for BGJHS was Reagan Smith with 12 points. Also contributing to the scoring effort was Faith Jackson with nine points, Bella Martin and Gia Triveri with eight points each and Aidan Woodward with a big 3-pointer at the end of the second quarter. Allyson Fleming and Katie Kershaw rounded out the scoring with two points each.
