Cardinal Mooney to take over Barnes & Noble for the Benefit of Akron Children’s Hospital
On Dec. 15 from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., Cardinal Mooney High School will ‘take over’ Barnes & Noble, located at the Shops at Boardman Park - 381 Boardman-Poland Road in Boardman, for the benefit of Akron Children’s Hospital of the Mahoning Valley. CMHS students will host events throughout the weekend, including gifts wrapped by CMHS students and ACHMV volunteers for a small fee, which will be donated to the hospital’s program, the CMHS choir will entertain shoppers with Christmas carols at noon and at various times, CMHS students will read stories and conduct a crafting project with elementary school students.
Healthy eating program set for Jan. 9
Healthy Eating for You, a free program sponsored by Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley and led by a registered dietitian, will address portion size, reading and understanding nutrition labels, and learning to eat mindfully. This program will take place from 2-4 p.m. on Jan. 9 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, located at 8401 Market St. in Boardman. To register, call 330-480-3070. Steel Historian to share memories
Steel historian Dr. Thomas E. Leary will share memories of his lifetime on Dec. 15 at 10 a.m., at the Kravitz’s Deli meeting room for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society. The program is open to the public. Admission is $5 for members and $6 for non-members. Complimentary refreshments will be served and a 50/50 raffle will take place to benefit the society’s education mission. Instrumental music is by Dolores DePietro. Reservations are suggested. Walk-ins admitted, based upon seat availability.
Local church hosts cookies and crafts event
Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Ave. in Boardman (next to West Boulevard School) will host a Cookie Walk and Craft Sale on Dec. 15 from 9-11 a.m. or until sold out. Homemade Christmas cookies will be sold for $7 per dozen (your choice of cookies). A portion of the proceeds will support the church’s charities. Call Sandy Dorman at 330-718-1572 with any questions.
I Read YA book club
Adult fans of young adult (YA) literature from ages 18-118 this book club is for you. The next meeting will take place on Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. This month they will be discussing “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott. This event is for adults.
Blood drive

All Aboard!
The Riverside Railroad Club will have a two-day model train display open to the public at the Boardman library from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Dec. 15.
Playtime at your library
Prepare for kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on Dec. 19 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. This event is for ages 2-6.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at 10 a.m. on Dec. 18 at the Boardman library.
Apprentice’s Inn
Join the Boardman library on Dec. 19 at 6:30 p.m. for its beginners Dungeons and Dragons club and join the adventure. This will be its campaign finale. Refreshments and snacks are provided. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
Health challenge takes place on Jan. 7

Gamblers Anonymous meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.
Carter’s pajama drive to benefit patients at Akron Children’s
Now through Jan. 5, Carter’s in Boardman is collecting new pajamas for patients at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley that will be distributed throughout the holiday season. Customers can purchase a pair of new pajamas for the drive when shopping at the Carter’s store in the Shops at Boardman Park. All donations will stay local for patients at the hospital’s Beeghly campus. Last year’s campaign resulted in donations of 2,032 pairs of pajamas at a value of $36,576. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 4:30 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa.
