Mamma mia, that was a hit show!
The Youngstown Playhouse’s production of “Mamma Mia!” lived up to its lofty expectations.
All eight performances of the musical, which ended a two-week run Sunday, were sold out.
In fact, the theater had to turn away a couple hundred people who sought tickets during the final weekend of the run.
If you were one of those unlucky ones, there is still hope.
The Playhouse is trying to secure the rights to reprise the show in June or July, said James McClellan, operations manager of the theater. If or when that happens, we will let you know.
“Mamma Mia!” is a fun and sunny show, liberally peppered with the catchy hits of ’70s pop supergroup ABBA.
In terms of gravitas, it will never be confused with “Hamlet.” But it’s definitely a crowd-pleaser.
In fact, one would have to go back decades and decades to find a show at the Playhouse that matched it at the box office (but don’t ask me what it would be).
The best-attended show in recent memory at the Playhouse was the 2015 production of “Cats” – and “Mamma Mia!” beat its sales mark by a thousand tickets.
“Cats” only had seven performances, but it still was eclipsed any way you look at it. Well over 400 tickets were sold for every performance of “Mamma Mia!”
Not sure if the Playhouse keeps stats on this, but it also might have set the record for liquor sales. McClellan said the lobby bar, which is open before each performance and at intermission, grossed $1,200 over the run, and had to be restocked for each show. Alcohol is offered on a donation basis, and the “Mamma Mia!” crowd was generous.
ACTOR CHRIStopher MELE appears in ‘Dannemora’
Christopher Mele of Columbiana has done it again.
He had a small role in the 2016 film “Fences,” which garnered a lot of Oscar love, including a Best Picture nomination.
Now, Mele has a small role in the Showtime series “Escape at Dannemora,” which has earned a Golden Globe nod for Best Limited Series or Movie Made for Television.
He appears in three of the eight episodes. The series airs Sundays at 10 p.m. (episode five is coming up).
Mele plays a prison guard with the moniker Big Dummy. He spent a week in New York last year filming his scenes.
“Dannemora” is based on a true story about a 2015 prison break at Clinton Correctional Facilty in upstate New York. It was directed by Ben Stiller and stars Patricia Arquette, Benicio Del Toro and Paul Dano.
