1917: British forces capture Jerusalem from the Ottoman Turks.

1935: The Downtown Athletic Club of New York honors college football player Jay Berwanger of the University of Chicago with the DAC Trophy, which later would become known as the Heisman Trophy.

1993: Kenneth Numerouskey, 27, of Warren says Warren city officials have violated his First Amendment rights by refusing to grant him a permit for a Ku Klux Klan rally on Courthouse Square. Law Director Gregory Hicks says the rally would not be in the best interests of city residents, and a permit will not be issued.

Former Cardinal Mooney standout Jaime Mendez, a Kansas State back, is named first team All-American by the Associated Press. Korey Stringer of Warren Harding High, an Ohio State standout, is named to the second team and Andre Coleman, a graduate of Hickory High and teammate of Mendez, is named to the third squad.

Bermann Electric Co., which has been selling and servicing lighting fixtures in Youngstown’s Market Street area for 60 years, is moving from its Southern Boulevard store to a new site on Boardman-Poland Road next to the DIY Home Center.

1978: Congressman-elect Lyle Williams, R-19th, of Lordstown, names a dozen men and women to his paid staff and announces plans for offices in Mahoning and Trumbull counties and Youngstown. He keeps Kathy Palmeter, who has worked for Democratic Rep. Charles J. Carney, on his Washington staff.

Girard firemen rescue Corneal Lowe, who is 101, from his burning house at 315 Plymouth St. It is the second time in a week that a Girard resident was rescued from a fire.

Using slides of pictures taken by both American and Japanese military photographers, John Schulte re-creates the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, for the Downtown Kiwanis Club, which met at the YMCA.

1968: YSU Coach Dom Rosselli’s tallest Penguin, 6-foot-9-inch sophomore Willie Teague, scores 25 points to lead Youngstown State University to a 75-51 victory over Toronto before 1,500 fans at Struthers Field House.

More than 650 people attend the ninth annual St. Elizabeth Charity Ball at the Mahoning Country Club. Half the proceeds will be used to finance a feasibility study on establishing a medical school at Youngstown State University.

1943: A Mahoning County jury finds Pvt. Luis Martin not guilty by reason of insanity in the shooting death of Guy Jacobs, a private detective at the Tod Hotel in May. Jacobs was investigating a ruckus in Martin’s hotel room when he was shot by the soldier, who was AWOL from Camp Reynolds.

Youngstown’s public schools will close for the Christmas recess two weeks before the holiday, earliest in many years.
