FALL ATHLETES Bre Evans
It took Cardinal Mooney High School girls soccer player Bre Evans only a moment to pick her favorite memory from her senior season. Evans scored the winning goal on Oct. 25 when the Cardinals defeated West Branch, 2-1, in the Division II district final at South Range.
“We had never beaten them before,” Evans said of knocking out the undefeated Warriors.
Evans was so excited that she “started crying. I don’t know how to explain it. “[West Branch was] really physical and it was really good competition.”
Carolyn Kay’s corner kick set up Evans for her game-winning shot.
That game wasn’t the only big win for the Cardinals that week. In the semifinal, Canfield defeated Howland 2-1 in overtime. Evans score the first goal, then set up Lexi Saunders for the winner.
“It was 1-on-one with the goalie, and she scored,” Evans said. “That was exciting.”
A Poland resident, Evans’ soccer career began in fifth grade when she played for the Austintown travel team.
“I wasn’t sure I wanted to play,” Evans said. “I liked the girls I played with, really fun. We were undefeated and I decided to [try] club with SVA [Soccer Vision Academy].”
She played for several club teams.
She enrolled at Mooney as a freshman. Soccer, with her in the starting lineup, helped her break the ice with meeting new friends.
Evans scored 28 goals in her final varsity season.
The Cardinals’ season ended with a 4-0 loss to Mentor Lake Catholic in the regional semifinals.
Her favorite subject is English. Her favorite teacher is Lawrence Bozick because of how he explains.
“He’s [a veteran] and he has all these experiences,” Evans said. “He tells stories [that are] full of meaning.”
