Saving blooms on hydrangeas?

Cut hydrangeas back by first counting up three flower buds (the fat buds), then make a cut. Cover the plant with 1-2 bags of mulch for winter. Check halfway through winter to replace mulch dug out by squirrels and chipmunks.
