Sobieska to return for New Music concert

Polish-born violinist-violist Wanda Sobieska will return to Youngstown today for a free concert at 7 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, 421 Covington St., sponsored by the New Music Guild.

Pianist Anthony Ruggiero and clarinetist Marissa Lyerly will accompany her.

The concert will include Henryk Wieniawski’s Polonaise in D Major, Bela Bartok’s Duet No. 21 “Greeting for the New Year,” works by Youngstown State University Professor Emeritus Robert Rollin, and more.

Sobieska has appeared as solo and chamber musician in the United States, Poland and Canada. She regularly plays in many professional orchestras.

Sobieska is also a gifted arranger and has studied composition for many years.

Dana alumni Ruggiero is a pianist, organist and choir director who has worked at many churches in Northeast Ohio and Florida. He is also a Dana faculty member.

Lyerly is completing her clarinet master of music performance degree. She has served as principal clarinet of the Dana Wind Ensemble, the Dana Symphony Orchestra and in University Opera productions.

Sobieska is making a new arrangement for the trio performers – a version of Bach’s Cantata “Wachet Auf.” There will also be selections appropriate to the Christmas season.

The trio will also perform Rollin’s Trio on a Poem by D. H. Lawrence. Ruggiero will perform several of Rollin’s solo piano compositions, and Lyerly will play the Youngstown premiere of Rollin’s “The Gifts of Spring” for solo clarinet.
