Congregation returns to historic building for Advent lessons and carols
The congregation of St. James’ Episcopal Church will return to its historic building in Boardman Park, St. James’ Meeting House, on Dec. 9 at 10 a.m., for its annual service of Advent lessons and carols. It has become the tradition of St. James’ to host this service on the second Sunday of Advent. The historic St. James’ meeting house is decorated each year by the Holborn Herb Growers Guild. Tapestries of Ohio to host Christmas concert
On Dec. 8 at 2 p.m., St. James’ Episcopal Church in Boardman will host a free madrigal Christmas concert by Tapestries of Ohio. The program will run about an hour, and a reception will follow the concert. Tapestries of Ohio, Inc. is a non-profit, self-sustaining organization dedicated to providing educational and entertaining activities in Trumbull and Mahoning counties and the region. Members from four counties volunteer their time and talents to ensure quality performances. The group is an associate member of the Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County. The performers dress in garb that hearkens back to the sixteenth century, from which most of their music comes, and sings mostly a capella, and by memory. Local church hosts musicians in “A Victorian Christmas”
Westminster Presbyterian Church will host Kirk Kupensky, harpist, and Kathryn Miller, organist, in “A Victorian Christmas” concert on Dec. 9 at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel of Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Fellows hosts Breakfast with Santa
Fellows Riverside Gardens is hosting a Breakfast with Santa event on Dec. 8 from 9-10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Space is limited. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens at 330-716-7116 to make reservations. All children must be accompanied by a registered adult. All participants, including children younger than the age of 2, must be pre-registered. The cost to participate is $16 for children ages 12 and older, $10.50 for children ages 2-11 and free for children younger than the age of 2.
BHS orchestras to present winter festival concert
The Boardman High School symphony, chamber and classical orchestras will present their annual Winter Orchestra Festival on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman Performing Arts Center. The event will feature holiday tunes, and a cello performance by senior solo competition winner Delia Walkowiec. Admission is a $3 donation for adults and a $1 donation for students. Pre-schoolers and senior citizens are admitted free of charge. The Boardman orchestra program is under the direction of Michele Prokop, Bill Amendol and Joel Monaco.
Shale to give presentation at Dec. 8 historical society meeting
Rick Shale will give a presentation on “The History of Idora Park” at 10 a.m. on Dec. 8 at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave. His lecture is sponsored by the Boardman Historical Society and is free to the public. Reservations are suggested and can be made by calling Dona Hammond at 330-726-0651. Shale currently serves on the Board of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society. He currently serves as copresident of the Boardman Historical Society and is a past president of the Mahoning Valley Watercolor Society. He previously served on the Mill Creek MetroParks Board of Park Commissioners, the national Board of Directors of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and served as a trustee of the national Phi Kappa Phi Foundation. He is the author of “Idora Park: The Last Ride of Summer” (co-authored with Charles J. Jacques, Jr.) and “Historic Mill Creek Park” (co-authored with Carol Potter). He has also written “Donald Duck Joins Up: The Walt Disney Studio During World War II” and three books on the Academy Awards. The Boardman Historical Society meets on the second Saturday of each month from September through May at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library for a lecture on some aspect of local history. Visitors, new members and guests are always welcome.
Steel Historian to share memories
Steel historian Dr. Thomas E. Leary will share memories of his lifetime on Dec. 15 at 10 a.m., at the Kravitz’s Deli meeting room for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society. The program is open to the public. Admission is $5 for members and $6 for non-members. Complimentary refreshments will be served and a 50/50 raffle will take place to benefit the society’s education mission. Instrumental music is by Dolores DePietro. Reservations are suggested. Walk-ins admitted, based upon seat availability.
Local church hosts cookies and crafts event
Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Ave. in Boardman (next to West Boulevard School) will host a Cookie Walk and Craft Sale on Dec. 15 from 9-11 a.m. or until sold out. I Read YA book club
Adult fans of young adult (YA) literature from ages 18-118 this book club is for you. The next meeting will take place on Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. This month they will be discussing “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott. This event is for adults.
Reader’s Choice book club
Discuss “The Story of Arthur Truluv” by Elizabeth Berg at the Boardman library on Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. They will preview January’s book, “Mrs. Sherlock Holmes” by Brad Ricca. Share your favorite books and find out which new ones are being published. This event is for adults.

Friendly Squares Christmas dinner and dance
The Friendly Squares will host their Christmas Dinner Dance on Dec. 8 at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. The festivities begin with a Christmas dinner for Friendly Squares members from 6-7:30 p.m. Members should RSVP for dinner by Nov. 30 to Frankie Hammond at 330-506-3370. Bring a covered dish to share. Square dancing, which is open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m. Gene Hammond and Neil Harner will be the callers and Frankie Hammond will be cuing the line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual. There is a $6 donation per person at the door. Local church hosts annual live nativity
Disciples Christian Church, located at 565 Boardman-Canfield Road at the west end of the Boardman Plaza next to Burlington’s, is hosting is annual free living nativity event, Journey to Bethlehem, on Dec. 9 from 1-3 p.m. This event is handicap accessible and tours run approximately every 15 minutes. The event offers live animals, including a camel, crafts, cookies, hot chocolate and more. There will be photo opportunities so bring your camera.
All Aboard!
The Riverside Railroad Club will have a two-day model train display open to the public at the Boardman library from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Dec. 14 and 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Dec. 15. All families are invited to a special story time at 7 p.m. on Dec. 13 featuring train stories and a chance to make and wear an engineer’s hat.
Playtime at your library
Prepare for kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on Dec. 19 at 10 a.m. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. This event is for ages 2-6.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at 10 a.m. on Dec. 11 and 18 at the Boardman library.
Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Boardman library on Dec. 12 and 26 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Lego my library
Meet at the Boardman library on Dec. 8 at 10 a.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
Apprentice’s Inn
Join the Boardman library on Dec. 19 at 6:30 p.m. for its beginners Dungeons and Dragons club and join the adventure. This will be its campaign finale. Refreshments and snacks are provided. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
Retired educators to meet in December
The Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on Dec. 12 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m. with lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. The Boardman High School jazz band will provide the entertainment. Carol Kinsey, regional liaison from ORTA, will present updates from STRS. The community service project is monetary donations and toys for the Salvation Army. Grilled chicken salad or the buffet lunch, which will feature baked ham, will be served. Carter’s pajama drive to benefit patients at Akron Children’s
Now through Jan. 5, Carter’s in Boardman is collecting new pajamas for patients at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley that will be distributed throughout the holiday season. Customers can purchase a pair of new pajamas for the drive when shopping at the Carter’s store in the Shops at Boardman Park. All donations will stay local for patients at the hospital’s Beeghly campus. Last year’s campaign resulted in donations of 2,032 pairs of pajamas at a value of $36,576. Gamblers Anonymous meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.
Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings
Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio.
