The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will host Dr. George Johnson for a lecture at noon Saturday in the Carriage House behind The Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave. Johnson will present “Why in the World is THAT on the Christmas Tree?” Participants will learn about unusual decorations and the stories or legends that caused them to be incorporated as Christmas decorations. Wreath ceremony planned Saturday

NORTH JACKSON

North Jackson Cemetery, N. Warren Salem Road, will host a wreath ceremony for veterans at 10 a.m. Saturday. More than 300 veterans are buried in the cemetery and each will have a wreath placed on their grave. Family members are invited to place a wreath on their loved one’s grave. Members from Ellsworth VFW and Lake Milton Post 747 will present a brief program. Wreaths will be provided by Ohio State Extension Service master gardeners and North Jackson Citizens Association will provide refreshments. For information, call Fred Schrock at 330-538-3834.

Coaches to donate to United Way

The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley is sponsoring Dine United with Coaches Burger Bar. Coaches will donate a quarter for every burger sold at all locations throughout December. Locations include: 708 Boardman-Canfield Road, Boardman; 3032 Center Road, Poland; 5529 Mahoning Ave., Austintown; and 635 East State St., Salem.

Church cancels Christmas party

The Rev. Lewis Macklin is announcing the cancellation of the International Ministerial Association Christmas party that was scheduled to take place Thursday. A regular meeting will take place at 11 a.m. Dec. 10, to discuss the Emancipation Service set for Jan. 1 at Calvary Baptist church, 1463 Shields Road.

Society will host dinner and concert

MERCER, PA.

The Mercer County Historical Society will host its annual Christmas concert and dinner at 5p.m. Saturday in the library of the Anderson Building at 119 S. Pitt St. Tickets are $12 for the first-come, first-served dinner. Reservations must be made by noon Wednesday by calling 724-662-3490 or by visiting the society. The society also has multi-colored Christmas bulbs depicting the Helen Black Miller Memorial Chapel in red, black and green for $10 a piece, with tax included; and a pictorial history of the Shenango Reservoir coffee-table book for $50, tax included. Shipping and handling are an additional cost.

Advent event planned

NEW WILMINGTON, PA.

White Chapel United Methodist Church, 415 New Castle-Mercer Road, will present “O Holy Light,” a walk-through Advent event for the community. Participants are asked to visit a candlelit Christmas chapel. A walk through Advent stations will allow time to reflect on the meaning of Christmas. The chapel will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 6 and 7 and from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 8, at which date there will be a movie, snacks and crafts for the kids. Every day is free and open to the public. Society hosts tours

The Salem Historical Society will host a series of Christmas Light tours to view the lights around the city at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. Dec. 7, 14 and 20.
