Mark Bishop to speak to Curbstone Coaches
BEAVER TOWNSHIP
WNIO-AM 1390 sports radio talk show host Mark “Munch” Bishop will be the guest speaker at Monday’s luncheon meeting of The Curbstone Coaches at the Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Road.
The event begins at noon. The public is welcome to attend.

The Poland High School football team won its 1999 Division state title at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon not Fawcett Stadium in Canton. Maurice Clarett was not a member of the 2002 Warren Harding team that lost to Cincinnati Elder in the Division I title game. Those errors were made in a column in Saturday’s edition.
Mauri finishes 29th in Nike Cross Nationals
Howland cross country runner Vincent Mauri finished 29th at the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Ore., on Saturday.
Mauri ran a 15:31.50 at Glendoveer Golf Course. Liam Anderson won the event with a 14:57.60.
Mauri qualified for Nationals after finishing fourth at regionals Nov. 6. The top eight runners from each region advanced to Saturday’s race.
Curbstone Coaches to host 52nd HOF Banquet
The 52nd Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame Banquet is scheduled for May 5 with 12 new members set for enshrinement during ceremonies at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center in Boardman.
Former Major League Baseball umpire and Mahoning Valley resident John Hirschbeck will serve as guest speaker.
The 2019 class includes: Kirk Baker (football), Teri Haefke (bowling), Leo Hawkins (football), Len Holman (special award), Joe Jeswald (football), Rick King (contribution to sports), Roger Kreps (track and field-cross country), Patrick Lorelli (contribution to sports), Sam Naples (martial arts), Dianne Rappach-Kosco (basketball), Attorney Lou Schiavoni (boxing) and Jim Snowden (football).
Individual tickets are $60, tables of eight $480 and will be available in mid-January.

Force best Phantoms in shootout win
Youngstown
Ryan O’Reilly scored the only goal in a five-round shootout as the Fargo Force outlasted the Youngstown Phantoms 4-3 on Saturday night in the Covelli Centre.
The Force (11-7-1-2) scored three first-period goals off Youngstown goalkeeper Christian Stoever, but he kept them scoreless until the shootout. Ben Meyers, Ryan O’Reilly and Carter Randklev scored for Fargo.
The Phantoms (8-9-0-3) got two first-period goals of their own from Brett Murray and Trevor Kuntar, and Craig Needham tied the game in the third.
Stoever made 25 saves and Fargo goalie Ryan Bischel stopped 21 shots. Bischel allowed the game-winning goal in a loss to Youngstown on Friday night.
The Phantoms will travel for one game against Team USA on Friday before returning home to play a three-game series with Chicago Dec. 14-16.
Weise helps Flyers defeat Penguins
PITTSBURGH
Dale Weise scored in the first minute of the third period and the Philadelphia Flyers held on for a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night.
Claude Giroux, Travis Konecny and Jakub Voracek also scored for the Flyers, who won for the second time in eight games. Anthony Stolarz stopped 30 shots.
Sidney Crosby scored his 14th for Pittsburgh, while Riley Sheahan also scored for the Penguins, who lost their second straight and seventh of 10. Casey DeSmith made 22 saves.
Weise gave Philadelphia a 3-2 lead 51 seconds into the third period with a short-handed goal. He beat DeSmith between the pads on the breakaway for his second goal this season. The Penguins have allowed a league-worst six short-handed goals.
