Canfield’s Sammarone chooses Findlay
Canfield
Canfield’s Serena Sammarone is continuing her basketball career at Findlay after signing her National Letter of Intent on Friday.
Sammarone is set to be a four year letter-winner in girls basketball for the Cardinals, earning first team all-conference and all-District honors as a junior as well as claiming the All-American Conference Red Tier “Player of the Year” acclaim. She also has earned three varsity letters in track while qualifying for the regional track meet in the long jump last season.
YSU’s Charles Reeves no longer on team
YOUNGSTOWN
Youngstown State confirmed on Friday that redshirt-freshman tight end Charles Reeves is no longer with the football team. He was on the roster through the end of the season, but the university said he left the team in early October.
Reeves, who came to YSU after being dismissed from Pitt in July, appeared in Penguins’ first four games and did not record any statistics. Reeves was a four-star recruit out of Steubenville.
OSU to stop using printable tickets
COLUMBUS
Ohio State University is ending the use of print-at-home tickets to athletic and other events as fakes have become an increasing problem in recent years.
Brett Scarborough, the associate athletic director for ticketing, told The Columbus Dispatch the change was made when tickets went on sale for winter sports this year. Scarborough says printed tickets won’t be allowed at football games next year.
Scarborough says fraudsters sometimes create fake print-at-home tickets or alter real tickets to look like more expensive seats to increase their price.
The school is urging fans to rely on mobile tickets on their smartphones, or more traditional hard-copy tickets.
Ohio State recommends fans avoid resellers and instead use authorized ticket platforms, including its own ticket office, Ticketmaster and the Ohio State Ticket Exchange.
Indians trade Gomes to Nationals
CLEVELAND
The Indians traded one of their big arms — from behind the plate.
Cleveland, which has discussed moving right-handers Corey Kluber, Trevor Bauer and Carlos Carrasco in possible trades while restructuring its payroll, dealt All-Star catcher Yan Gomes to the Washington Nationals on Friday night.
In return, the three-time defending AL Central champions got outfielder Daniel Jonson, right-hander Jefry Rodriguez and a player to be named. Team president Chris Antonetti called Johnson and Rodriguez “upper-level prospects” who should be able to help the Indians in the next few seasons.
The Gomes deal is unlikely to be the last move this offseason by the Indians, who followed up another strong regular season stretch run with a disappointing performance against Houston in the AL Division Series. Cleveland got swept, and with its window for contention possibly closing, the team is looking to fill some holes in the outfield and bullpen.
Cleveland may have to move Kluber, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, or Bauer to find help. Antonetti would not comment on any potential deals involving the right-handers.
