Bells to ring in celebration of signing of The Constitution
The Daughters of the American Revolution will celebrate the beginning of Constitution Week on Sept. 17 by participating in the nation-wide Bells Across America event at 4 p.m. The Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are asking schools, churches and individuals throughout The Valley to celebrate the signing of The Constitution by ringing bells at 4 p.m. on Sept. 17, the same date and time it was signed in 1787. There will be a gathering to read the Preamble and ring individual bells at Road of Remembrance Rock, located on Market Street and Newport Drive in Boardman, at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. September square dance and weekly lessons begin
The Niles Friendly Squares will celebrate their eighth anniversary at their monthly square dance on Sept. 8 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Dress is casual and there is a $6 per person donation at the door. Gene Hammond will be the caller. A new year of weekly square dance lessons will begin on Sept. 11 from 7-9 p.m. Each lesson builds upon the previous session and will include learning new steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The Tuesday evening sessions will run weekly through April 16, 2019 at the Niles SCOPE Center. There is a nominal fee of $6 per person per lesson. Labor Day closings at the library
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Labor Day on Sept. 2 and 3.
Area singers invited to annual Canfield Fair event
As has occurred for many years, on the Sunday morning of the Canfield Fair (Sept. 2 this year), area singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing during the 9:30 a.m. Canfield Fair Ecumenical worship service. A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service. The musical selections this year include “Look at the World” and “With a Voice of Singing.” Participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day. Musical direction and additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich, accompanied by Sherry Goddard on piano and Josh Comport on trumpet.
Mule Racing makes return to the Canfield Fair
After more than a 20-year absence from the Canfield Fair, mule racing is back for 2018. This time the mules will be under saddle instead of hitched to carts. Local mule owners are encouraged to enter their mules in the 1-furlong (1/8 mile) races. The mules will be racing for purses of $300 elimination heats and a $500 purse in the final, with no more than two heats for any one mule. The mule races will take place during the Harness Races on Sept. 3 at noon. Also, during this year’s 3-day harness meet, the Junior Fair will be sponsoring several other races. This includes saddle horse and pony racing, on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Playtime at your library
Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten at the Canfield library on Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for ages 2-6. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Chalk the walk
Come by the Canfield library on Sept. 7 from 3-4 p.m. to decorate the sidewalks. The rain date for this event is Sept. 14. Children of all ages will receive chalk to decorate a section of the sidewalk. There will be a special prize for the best book-based theme.
Net neutrality
Join journalism and communication professor Dr. Shelley Blundell (YSU), graduate assistant in the American Studies program Elizabeth Lehman (YSU) and Edward Koltonski, PLYMC’s business librarian on Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library for a look at developing a better understanding of the complex topic of net neutrality. Discover the history of the debate, how it has been applied in your daily life and what could happen next because of the recent changes made by the FCC. Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library every Thurday in September at 10 a.m.

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Fall fest
Celebrate the fall season with a story, traditional games, fall craft and snacks at the Canfield library on Sept. 22 at 2:30 p.m. This event is for children of all ages.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children who are ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday at 10 and 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Lego my library
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library on Sept. 15 at 2:30 p.m. and Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
Tales to tails
Come and read to your favorite therapy dogs at the Canfield library on Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. This helps to develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or the librarians will find one for you. This event is for children in grades kindergarten and up. Therapy dogs will be provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, a local Pet Therapy group. This event is for school-age children.
Make a small fairy garden
Use your imagination to create your own small fairy garden at the Canfield library on Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m. Container, soil and decorations will be provided as well as some snacks. This event is for tweens who are ages 9-12.
Coloring for grown-ups
Join the Canfield library on Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for adults and teens only.
Re-purposed book craft
Learn how to turn a hardcover book into a hollowed-out secret storage container at the Canfield library on Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. They will be taking used hardcover books and transforming them into hidden storage for your home or office. Sit and stitch
Sit and stitch with others at the Canfield library on Sept. 6 and 18 at 11 a.m. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your UFOs (Unfinished objects): quilting, appliqu , knitting or crochet projects and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity. This event is for adults.
Family movie
Join the Canfield library on Sept. 8 at 2:30 p.m. for a Saturday Movie Matinee. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Children age 7-years and younger must be with an adult.
Movie night
Join the Canfield library on Sept. 6 at 6 p.m. for a movie night where they will be watching a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. This event is for adults and teens. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. The movie will be either PG or PG 13.

If you have ever thought about cutting the cord on your cable or satellite or want to have more freedom of choice and save money, visit the Canfield library on Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. Learn about cord-cutting including the basics of streaming devices and services. This event is for adults.

Let the Canfield library teach you how to connect with family and friends on Facebook on Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. They will show you how to start posting, sharing and liking posts right away. Don’t have an account? They will help you set up your own account. Feel free to bring your laptop, tablet or smart phone to follow along and make signing up or using Facebook easy. Join this monthly book club for a lively discussion of titles chosen “Off the Shelves” of the Canfield library’s Book Club Room. The next meetings will be Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. and Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. This event is for adults. Stephen King Constant Readers club

Learn to play American Mah-Jongg, a fascinating rummy-like game played with tiles throughout September at the Canfield library. The game originated in China and gained popularity in the U.S. in the 1920s. Class size is limited and registration is required. Local skate park to be location of music festival
The Skatepark Music Festival will take place on Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at the Wedgewood Ramps in Youngstown. The cost is $5 at the door and the event will feature such bands as Alteras, Red Nose Panic, Rees Man Dolo & Droege, Wanderer, 13 Lucky, Evidence of Ruin, Whiskey Pilot, Service Monkeys and Gho$tlee. Food will be by Suzie’s and Mission Taco. The event is hosted and produced by Paul Goon.

Weekly square dance lessons to begin on Sept. 11
The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be on Sept. 11 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the basic square dance program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April 16. There is a nominal fee of $6 per lesson. The Friendly Squares also sponsors monthly dances with alternating dances, or tips, for new dancers to practice their skills as well as tips for more experienced dancers. All the lessons and monthly dances take place at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. CHS Class of 1983 to meet for reunion
The Canfield High School Class of 1983 will be hosting their 35-year class reunion Sept. 1 at Kennsington Grill, located at 4171 Westford Place in Canfield, beginning at 6 p.m. The evening will include a cash bar, heavy appetizers and music playing 80’s favorites. Tickets are $50 per person. For an additional $12 classmates can purchase the group photo which will be distributed later that evening. Guided labyrinth walk season begins at The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center
The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, begins its 2018 Guided Labyrinth Walk season with a walk on April 15 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of St. Angela Merici’s introduction to her Counsels. St. Angela founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to half an hour. All walks are scheduled weather-permitting. The list of walks is: Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. - “Get on Your Knees” and Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. - “Expect Big Surprises.” The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
