Foundations offer grants to teachers

YOUNGSTOWN

The Turning Foundation, in collaboration with The Raymond John Wean Foundation, recently announced a new round of Innovative Teacher Mini-Grants for the 2018-19 school year. Up to $50,000 in cash grant awards will be available to fund projects in a four-county area: Ashtabula, Columbiana, Trumbull and Mahoning counties, with a special focus on Warren and Youngstown City Schools. This grant opportunity promotes creative and innovative classroom practices that support 21st century teaching and learning. Grant cash awards range from $2,000 for individual teachers to $5,000 for larger collaboration efforts involving multiple educators and community partners. The deadline to submit a proposal is Sept. 26. Applications are available on the Turning Foundation website at www.turningfoundation.org/innovative-teacher-mini-grant-program-fall-2018/.

Official earns certification

BROOKFIELD

This summer, Velina Jo Taylor, Brookfield school superintendent, has completed the requirements to be certified as a Professional Human Capital Leader in Education.

This certification recognizes an individual’s mastery of a unique set of knowledge and skills in the areas of education and human resources. These individuals facilitate effective leadership and management in schools, districts and other educational organizations.

Renovations to Jones Hall recognized

YOUNGSTOWN

Recent improvements to the exterior of Jones Hall, the signature building on the campus of Youngstown State University, have been recognized with the Community Revitalization Award from the Mahoning Valley Historical Society. The award was presented to Ellen Tressel, YSU alumna and the wife of YSU President Jim Tressel, and Paul McFadden, president of the YSU Foundation, at the Historical Society’s recent annual meeting. Tressel and McFadden nominated the project for the award.

Online program earns ranking

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA

Slippery Rock University was recently recognized as having one of the country’s best online master’s degrees in reading by TheBestSchools.org. The website ranked every accredited online master’s degree program in reading across the country before compiling a list of the top 30 in the nation. SRU finished at No. 23.
