Williams PK with catsuit ban
NEW YORK
Serena Williams says her relationship with the French Open is fine despite the Grand Slam tournament’s plan to ban her skin-tight black catsuit.
Williams says she has spoken with the French Tennis Federation president, who said in Tennis Magazine the outfit would no longer be accepted.
Williams said Saturday she no longer needs to wear it because she found that compression tights also work to keep her blood circulating. She dealt with a health scare related to blood clots after giving birth to her daughter last Sept. 1, when she missed the U.S. Open.
She joked that “when it comes to fashion, you don’t want to be a repeat offender.”
IndyCar driver breathing on his own
MADISON, Ill.
IndyCar driver Robert Wickens was breathing without medical assistance and began speaking with his family Saturday for the first time since his harrowing wreck at Pocono Raceway.
Schmidt Peterson Motorsports made the announcement shortly before the start of the IndyCar race at Gateway Motorsports Park. The team is only fielding James Hinchcliffe’s car in Saturday night’s race, though the No. 6 that Wickens would have driven this week was parked outside the haulers.
Many drivers, crew members and fans were wearing hats and stickers in Wickens’ support.
The IndyCar rookie crashed early in last Sunday’s race at Pocono, touching Ryan Hunter-Reay and hurtling into the catch fence.
Americans score goals in the Bundesliga
American duo John Brooks and Fabian Johnson scored in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Brooks’ first goal since joining Wolfsburg last year paved the way for a 2-1 win against Schalke. The 25-year-old United States defender, who had a frustrating first season at the Volkswagen-backed club due to injury, met Maximilian Arnold’s corner with a powerful header.
Brooks then gave away a late penalty for a dangerous challenge on Schalke’s Breel Embolo. Nabil Bentaleb equalized from the spot before Daniel Ginczek claimed Wolfsburg’s winner in injury time.
Johnson helped Borussia Moenchengladbach beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-0, scoring the second goal after playing a one-two with Raffael.
