Fans of all types of needlework, but especially quilting, came to the Boardman library on July 20 for Crazy Quilting.
Volunteers from the Youngstown Embroidery Guild led the event, including Judy Power (Chairman for the Crazy Quilting project), Janis Finnochi, Jean Chamberlain, Sue Sizer, Sue Robinson, Ruth Ebert (Chairman for Outreach for Youngstown Embroidery Guild) and Sally Svoboda.
Volunteers leading the event came from Canfield, Poland, Salem, New Castle Bessemer and more. A few of them came with connections to local businesses that support the guild and cater to embroidery and quilting, such as the Log House in New Castle, Pa. (724-667-8444) and With Needle in Hand in Boardman (330-758-8122).
The participants set up at three tables within the library meeting room and gathered their supplies, which included kits that were put together by the embroidery guild. A table filled with examples was placed at the back of the room to showcase intricate projects and past work.
Participants at the project said that they really enjoy the event and that it’s a great chance for them to gather, talk and work together, and learn new skills to expand their quilting and embroidery talents. The participants that met on July 20 came to Crazy Quilting events in the past and all were past the beginners stage.
The project for this meeting involved embroidery. A brief history of embroidery was given by Power. She discussed the importance of washing your hands prior to beginning a project to minimize the risk of oils from your fingers staining your project. The participants then read over the instructions for the project before picking their first stitch. The volunteers made their way throughout the room, providing any assistance needed.
The Youngstown Embroidery Guild, which formed in 1974, meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. in Odd Fellows Hall, located at 111 South Broad Street in Canfield, next to Dairy Queen. The room they use is in the back of the building in the basement New guests are always welcome.
Crazy Quilting will continue on Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. The project will be a Christmas tree ornament design that will feature Swedish weaving on huck toweling. Another class will take place on Sept. 6 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Michael Kusalaba library on beginners cross-stitch.
