Car show to take place Saturday

The Sunrise Inn Car Show will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Sunrise Inn Restaurant, 510 E. Market St. Registration for cars, bikes and trucks begins at 10 a.m. Proceeds benefit the Travis Mills Foundation. For information, call 330-392-5176.

Food festival will take place Saturday

Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church, 626 Wick Ave., will host its Romanian Food Festival from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. There will be food, drinks and tours of the church at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

VFW Post 3538 to host dinner

VFW Col. Louis J. Campbell Post 3538, 157 Lowellville Road, will serve spaghetti dinners from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Meals include meatballs, salad, bread and butter and coffee. Cost is $7.50 for adults and $4 for children under 8. Carryout orders are $8 and will be available until 6 p.m. Containers will be provided.

Programming classes planned

Oak Hill Collaborative, AT&T and Youngstown State University are bringing more programming classes to local students through the High School Video Game Jam: Oak Hill. A $10,000 contribution from AT&T to the collaborative is supporting the project as part of AT&T Aspire, the company’s initiative to help provide access to education and training people need to get and keep good jobs. Oak Hill Collaborative is launching an interactive STEM program where high school students from the city will learn C++ programming language and object-oriented programming skills through development of video games with the assistance and guidance of experienced game developers and computer science professionals. The program will begin in September.

YMCA receives grant

NEW CASTLE, PA

The New Castle Community YMCA has been awarded a grant of $25,000 by the FISA Foundation in support of the Diamond Girls program. The Diamond Girls program serves local girls beginning in fifth grade until they graduate from high school to assist them in the development of self-worth, confidence and a healthy lifestyle. Participating girls are matched with professional women who volunteer their time to serve as mentors. The girls and their mentors meet monthly and participate in workshops and programs designed around issues related to young girls and teens, including communication skills, personal hygiene, personal finance, self-esteem, drug use and pregnancy prevention, social media, dating and creating a career path. There are currently 18 girls actively involved with the Diamond Girls Program.

Ben Stein to speak at YSU Sept. 20

Writer, lawyer, actor and political and economic commentator Ben Stein will present a lecture at 7 p.m. Sept. 20 at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 5th Ave.

The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is part of the YSU Skeggs Lecture Series.

While the event is free, tickets are required for admission. Tickets are available at the Stambaugh box office or online at www.stambaughauditorium.com.
