AUCTIONS

St. Columba Cathedral, 159 W. Rayen Ave., Youngstown, will host its third annual quarter auction at 6 p.m. Sept. 8 in the church hall. Doors open at 5:30. Cost is $10 for a paddle, and additional paddles will be for sale for $1 that evening. Guests may take snacks and refreshments, but concessions will be available. CRAFT SHOWS

Our Lady of the Lakes Women’s Guild will host a craft show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 3 at Our Lady of the Lakes Family Center, 1254 Grandview Road, Lake Milton. Free admission, free parking, handicapped accessible, lunch counter and 50-50 raffle. DANCES

Niles Friendly Squares will perform square dance demonstrations at the Canfield Fair from 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 30 and from 2 to 3 p.m. Sept. 2 on the stage in front of the International Building. Square dance classes will resume Sept. 11.

FESTIVALS

Holy Trinity Romanian Orthodox Church, 626 Wick Ave., will host its Romanian Food Festival from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. There will be many Romanian foods and drinks. There also will be musical entertainment and tours of the church at 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. The event is free to attend.

Liberty Fall Fest will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 29 at the L.Y.R.I.C. (old high school gym) on Churchill Road. Admission is free. There will be games, face painting, food vendors and vendors with wares. A Color Run/Walk will begin at 10 a.m. with registration at 9:30. Polish Youngstown will host its 10th annual Polish-American Heritage Day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at St. Anne Church, 4310 Kirk Road, Austintown. There will be a basket raffle and silent auction. Proceeds benefit workshops that are open to the community to educate about the Polish culture and heritage. Basket donations are needed, and ideas include holiday items, children’s items, food items, gift certificates and more. Anyone who donates a basket worth $50 will receive a free ticket to Polish Day and their name put into a prize drawing. Forms to donate baskets are available at St. Anne’s. St. Lucy Church and Santa Rosa de Lima Cultural Societies will sponsor a Food Fest from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Palermo Center, 397 Tenney Ave., Campbell. FUNDRAISERS

Austintown Alumni Association selling raffle tickets for its annual scholarship and mini grant fundraiser through Sept. 14. A book of six raffle tickets is $5 or individual tickets are $1 each and are available from any association member or by calling Susan Justice, president of the association, at 330-792-2667. Proceeds benefit the association’s scholarship fund and mini grants. The winners will be announced at half-time at the football game at Falcon Stadium on Sept. 14.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Mahoning Valley Inc. will host its annual Golf for Kids’ Sake Golf Outing Sept. 14 at Knoll Run Golf Course in Lowellville. The four-player scramble will begin 9 a.m. Cost is $75 per golfer and includes 18 holes with cart, continental breakfast, lunch and chicken or roast beef dinner. Casino Cafe Food Truck will host a block party to benefit the Foundation for the Visually Impaired from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday in the parking lot at Diletto Winery, 8578 Market St., Boardman. Fairhaven School will host its eighth annual golf outing Sept. 8 at Knoll Run Golf Course, 1421 Struthers-Coitsville Road, Lowellville. The event is hosted in collaboration with the Special Olympics and will raise funds in support of the school and the Fairhaven Special Olympians. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9. Cost is $70 per person and includes lunch, dinner and prizes. Proceeds benefit the development of the Fairhaven School. Fish Samaritan House will host “The Mahoning Valley’s Pasta Sauce Challenge: from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 9 at The Georgetown, 5945 South Ave., Boardman. Area restaurants will send in sauces for attendees to taste and vote for the “Best Sauce in the Valley.” The Fish Samaritan House is a nonprofit organization that serves the poor, the elderly and the children of Youngstown with food, furnishings and clothing. Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley will host its 19th annual 5K and 2-mile walk Sept. 15 at Holy Family Church, 2729 Center Road, Poland. The children’s race is free and will begin at 8:45 a.m., and the 5K and 2-mile walk will begin at 9. Registration fee for walkers and runners is $15 in advance or $20 the day of the event. Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past, the City of Youngstown, Youngstown City Schools, CIRV (the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence) and the Youngstown State University Department of Africana Studies are planning the Eighth Annual Nonviolence Parade and Rally at 3 p.m. Oct. 7. The parade will begin at Wick Avenue and Wood Street and proceed downtown to the Covelli Centre. The rally will follow the parade. The parade is open to all nonprofit organizations such as youth and community groups, schools, athletic teams, churches and neighborhood block watches as well as businesses and government officials. There is no fee to participate. Struthers Historical Society will host Alexander Frankfort Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Frankfort House, 50 Terrace St. There will be infantry demonstrations, American Indian displays, a rope walk and museum tours. Re-enactments will be featured by the Shriver Grays, 27th VA Co. G Re-eneactors; Sons of Confederate veterans; Boy Scout Troop 101; and a special appearance by Steffon Wydell Jones, a local researcher and one of the founders of the 5th United States Colored Infantry Regiment re-enactment group.

Sutliff Museum is announcing its exhibit that will run through August. The exhibit is “Being a Victorian: Hygiene History of the 19th Century,” and explores the hygiene habits of men and women in the late 1800s. There also is an exhibit of “The Original S’mores” ornaments. Each ornament shows a snowman made of marshmallows depicting various holidays, occupations, milestones of life, and more. The museum is on the second floor of the Warren Trumbull County Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. Admission is free, and hours are 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays and 1 to 4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Suzie’s Dogs & Drafts, 34 N. Phelps St., Youngstown, in cooperation with the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, is sponsoring a “Donate a Hot Dog” campaign to help provide food to the area’s homeless population. Throughout the year, Suzie’s customers can donate a hot dog for the hungry and write a note of support. Donations will be matched dog-for-dog by the restaurant. On the second Wednesday of every month, employees will provide a meal and bring all the notes for the overnight residents and meal visitors at the Rescue Mission. The goal is food for the body and encouragement for the spirit. The project is inspired by the shooting death last November of Colin Brown. Brown worked in the restaurant industry, managing newly opened restaurants and helping get them off the ground. He was a volunteer with the Common Wealth Kitchen Incubator in Youngstown, was known for his pay it forward attitude and always helping those in need.

Quaker Steak & Lube Austintown, 5800 Interstate Blvd., will host Patriot Day at the Lube at 6 p.m. Sept. 6. Military members in uniform or with a military ID will receive 20 percent off. The event will include a skydiver who will land in the parking lot.
