YSU soccer team loses to Howard

YOUNGSTOWN

Howard’s Aleeya Sawyer scored off an assist from Kendall Macauly in the 66th minute to seal a 2-0 victory against the Youngstown State women’s soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field.

Howard (1-1-0) got the scoring started in the first half when Jasmin Miller scored in the 24th minute on a breakaway goal. During the first half, sophomore goalkeeper Kate McEachern made three saves on seven shots.

In the second half, Youngstown State (0-1-1) outshot Howard 12-3.

Overall, the Penguins outshot Howard, 15-10, and held the advantage on corner kicks, 7-4. Freshman midfielder Luca Fahmer led the way with five shots with four other Penguins tallying two shots a piece.

Henry, Watson win at Sharon Speedway

Hartford

Cap Henry and Joel Watson were among Saturday’s winners at Sharon Speedway.

Henry won the FAST Series for the Hovis Auto & Truck Supply “410” Sprint Cars, edging Dale Balney.

Watson won the E-Mods race, finishing ahead of Gary Eicher. Jacob Eucher won the Summit Racing Equipment Econo Mods race.

Gordon watches Browns practice

Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon was back at practice on Sunday — as a spectator.

Gordon visited with teammates and Hall of Famer Jim Brown a day after ending his three-week absence from training camp and missing the first two exhibition games to work on his mental health and sobriety.

The former Pro Bowler appeared to be in a good mood — and in excellent shape — as he stayed to the side and worked with trainers on his conditioning.

Gordon, who has missed most of the past four seasons because of violations of the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, has not been cleared to practice. He may attend meetings and practices but is prohibited from being on the field.

No timetable has been set for Gordon’s return, but coach Hue Jackson said Saturday it’s possible he could play in the Sept. 9 season opener against Pittsburgh.

Wide receiver Jarvis Landry feels the same.

“Yeah, I mean, why not?” Landry said. “He’s been training this whole time, so we expect him to be ready. I’m sure he will be, but at the end of the day, we’re just happy to have him back.”

The 27-year-old Gordon excused himself from the team just before training camp opened last month. Gordon, who has not yet spoken to the media, said in a statement that he’s humbled at being back with the Browns and “I realize in order for me to reach my full potential my primary focus must remain on my sobriety and mental well-being.”

Gordon led the league with 1,646 yards receiving in 2013, when he burst onto the scene and became one of the league’s most dynamic players.

Park rallies to take LPGA event in playoff

INDIANAPOLIS

Sung Hyun Park erased a two-shot deficit over the final four holes and birdied the first hole of a playoff with Lizette Salas on Sunday to win the Indy Women in Tech Championship.

The two-time major champion from South Korea reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in the world with her third LPGA Tour victory of the season and fifth of her career.

Park closed with a 4-under 68 to match Salas at 23-under 265 at Brickyard Crosssing.

Salas appeared to be in control until hitting tee shots into the rough on the final two holes. She bogeyed No. 17 to fall into a tie with Park and missed a short birdie putt on No. 18. In the playoff, the American slid a longer birdie putt just left of the hole.

Park then knocked her putt on No. 18 right into the center of the cup.

Salas has not won on tour since the 2014 Kingsmill Championship.
